Wednesday, September 11

I kicked off my football week with another appearance on The STATE of PA Football show participating with a panel of guests to review the previous weeks’ games and preview the coming weeks’ contests.   A unique and welcome highlight of this show was it was a Zoom show and allowed me to participate from the comfort of my own home which saves on the driving for the week.

I thoroughly enjoy taking part in these types of football shows as the PA Football News staff is impressively talented each person having a specific district they focus on to watch and report on games.  Over the course of a show the audience can hear about dozens of teams, matchups and results from across the state!

While most weeks I traverse the Commonwealth to watch four games my schedule this time around only allowed for two games.  What better place to get the week started than a blockbuster matchup between two 6A District 11 undefeated squads in Nazareth and Bethlehem Freedom for early-season supremecy in the ultra-competitive Eastern Pennsylvania Conference.

What was most anticipated at this contest was the showdown of quarterbacks featuring Virginia Tech commit Peyton Falzone and East Stroudsburg commit Chase Walker.  The two signal-callers are massive in stature with Falzone standing 6’5″ and 200 pounds and Walker 6’4″ and 230 pounds.

As expected the game was closely-contested with the score sitting even at 10-10 at halftime.  In the third quarter, however, Freedom came out hot and scored 21 points in under two minutes on two passing touchdowns and an interception for touchdown to put the game away.  The Patriots remained undefeated on the season at 4-0 while Nazareth dropped to 3-1 on their campaign.

My second game of the week took me over two hours north and east nearly to the New York state border to the town of Milford to watch District 2 Scranton Prep vs. Delaware Valley.  Being my only game for the day I chose to arrive extra early for the game to give myself some time to explore Milford and I wasn’t disappointed.

Milford is a wonderfully preserved town having been the birthplace of the American Conservation Movement.  Dozens of homes and buildings harken back to their original days and the town is also highlighted by beautiful green spaces and visitor-friendly restaurants and businesses.

I’m a sucker for a good pizza pie and I was fortunate to land at a restaurant called The Social near the center of town.  The staff was tremendously welcoming as I was seated outdoors to people-watch during my meal and my waitress was very knowledgable about the history of the town.  I was treated to a delicious thin crust mushroom pizza perfectly cooked in their wood-fired oven.

Arriving at the stadium with a full stomach I was surprised to see so many people already at the venue a full two hours prior to game time.   What I came to learn was I was walking directly into Warrior Fest a craft and food event to support the Delaware Valley clubs and organizations.  The entire parking lots and school grounds were packed and it was impressive to see so much community participation.

And finally…there was a game that took place pitting 3A #7 Scranton Prep vs. 5A Delaware Valley.  While Delaware Valley was 0-3 on the season their early-season schedule was torturous and I knew their matchup with the Crusaders would produce a close contest.  The game did not disappoint ending with a 28-25 victory for Scranton Prep.  Delaware Valley trailed by 18 points late in the contest but made a hard charge in the final quarter to fall by just three points.
