In life, you always need to have a Plan B and I had to pull mine out this week as things did not go as anticipated from the jumpstart. Plan A was to attend a concert in Philadelphia on Thursday night and not to attend a game that day. I had the concert tickets and hotel ready to go but Plan A went out the window when the concert got cancelled and the hotel informed me I couldn’t cancel or reschedule my room. While I was disappointed I couldn’t go to the concert it did give me an opportunity to attend a Philadelphia Public League game which wasn’t part of the master plan for this season.
And that’s how I found myself at the South Philly Supersite location to watch Vaux Big Picture take on Kensington at 3pm on a Thursday afternoon. The Philly Pub League is often an interesting adventure the least of which is watching a game with the city skyline in the background at one end of the field and at the other a view of the Phillies baseball stadium flanked by a casino! The experience never fails to disappoint and this trip to the City of Brotherly Love was no different.
On the field, a back and forth battle ensued with Vaux (pronounced like “row”) coming out on top against Kensington by a tally of 18-12. Here’s some exciting highlights from the Philly Pub League matchup…

On Friday, I chose to check in with the 14-time PA State Champion 2A #4 ranked Southern Columbia Tigers as they traveled to 3A #8 ranked Mifflinburg for what appeared to be a dandy matchup between a couple local programs. While I typically reserve a Southern Columbia game for the playoffs or the State Finals it’s been a couple years since the Tigers made the trip to Cumberland Valley and I wanted to see where they were at as a team for the 2025 season.
What I witnessed was a resurgent and dangerous-again Southern Columbia squad that could compete for their 15th PA State Championship this season. The Tigers defense is on par with any in the 2A class across the state and the offense, while not as powerful as in past seasons, has made strides each week and is becoming more powerful as the season progresses. On the flip side, Mifflinburg is also a dynamite team that is the favorite for the District 4 title and should also make a push deep into the state football playoffs.
On this night, a jam-packed crowd was treated to a hard-fought and down to the wire game eventually won by visiting Southern Columbia by a score of 21-14. Here’s some highlights from the hotly-contested affair!

My second trip to Philadelphia on the week was a treat on two fronts as I was going to watch two of the top teams in the state collide with 6A #2 ranked LaSalle squaring off against rival 6A #4 ranked St. Joe’s Prep. Also, and just as impressively, the game was taking place at historic Franklin Field at the University of Pennsylvania which is always an experience in itself.
Here’s a look at Franklin Field prior to the game…

The views at Franklin Field only became more impressive once the two Philly stalwarts took to the gridiron for City Catholic League regular season supremacy. Division 1 athletes were numerous on this night and the brightest stars were easy to find all night as they accounted for most of the scoring in a 31-20 LaSalle victory. Here’s some of the tallies in the regular season matchup won by LaSalle for the second season in a row.
