The Ryder Cup – USA vs. Europe (Farmingdale, NY)
Saturday, September 27
5A #5 Chester (5-0) at 5A Chichester (3-2)
2A West Catholic (3-1) at 2A Lansdale Catholic (4-1)
ROUNDTRIP – 484 MILES
Friday, September 26
There’s not many events that have the draw to pull me from going to a high school football game. The opportunity to attend the Ryder Cup and the biggest sporting affair on the planet this past weekend was enough to make the four hour drive to Bethpage Black Golf Course in Farmingdale, NY.
The Ryder Cup is an every-two-years showdown between USA and Europe with the top two dozen golfers on the planet squaring off golfing supremacy. The event rotates between a course in the United States and Europe every two years so I couldn’t pass up the chance to be in attendance for golf’s version of the Super Bowl when it was being held so close in the Northeast.
While I had watched the Ryder Cup on television dozens of times over the years I found the in-person experience to be nearly unmatched in my long list of attending live sporting events. I attended on Friday for the opening day of the three-day event and myself along with more than 70,000 additional fans packed the iconic Bethpage Black Golf Course to cheer on our golfing heroes. While the home squad United States had a rough day (and weekend) the experience was both patriotic and colossal as chants of “USA, USA, USA” rang out across the crowds.
I would rank my experience at the Ryder Cup a close second to only the time I attended the Army-Navy Game a number of years ago. Check out some videos from my Friday at the Ryder Cup!

And now…back to our regularly scheduled program…PA High School Football!
After driving through unreal traffic from the Ryder Cup to Philly overnight (a 3 hour trip took nearly 6 hours) I caught some sleep and then headed to an 11am District 1 faceoff between undefeated 5A #5 state-ranked Chester and 5A Chichester. My intention was to assess Chester’s team in relation to the rest of the state’s 5A top-ranked squads. To say the Chester Clippers didn’t disappoint in a gross understatement!
Chester laid a 78-7 thumping on their Delaware Valley League rivals from Chichester and were relentless on both sides of the ball lighting up the scoreboard for four quarters. Chester proved to be an ultra-talented team and could make some waves in the State Playoffs this season.
Here’s a few highlights from Chester vs. Chichester…

While my second game on Saturday didn’t account for 80+ points on the scoreboard it did present a tightly-contested affair as District 12 foes West Catholic and Lansdale Catholic battled for a grip on the top spot in the Philly Catholic League Blue Division. The game was being hosted at North Penn High School in Lansdale for the hometeam Crusaders.
In a low-scoring contest the two teams battled to an 8-7 score at halftime led by the Burrs of West Catholic. The game remained tight in the second half as well with Lansdale Catholic capturing the lead in the 3rd quarter and holding on for the victory.
Here’s some highlights from Lansdale Catholic vs. West Catholic!
