The Hollidaysburg Golden Tigers capped a 9-1 regular season with offensive fireworks plus an opportune defense in handing the playoff bound DuBois Beavers their third loss of the season.   The game was played at Mansell Stadium in DuBois and ended up 49-28 in favor of the visitors.  “It was a great game.  They have some really good players and a great offense obviously,” said Hollidaysburg’s head coach Homer DeLattre.

Hollidaysburg’s big offensive line opened lanes and got a lot of push and power against the smaller DuBois defense.  That allowed the Golden Tiger running backs, led by Mitchell Baronner, to average 6 yards a carry.  Baronner himself gained 161 yards on 15 carries and scored a pair of touchdowns.  Also, quarterback Maddox Bainey had a big night throwing for over 200 yards and 3 touchdowns.  In fact, Hollidaysburg had thirteen plays of 10 yards or more.

“Great season.  Great season by our guys.  And well deserved,” stated DeLattre. Coach DeLattre talked a little about his seniors, “These guys took their lumps.  They were 2-8 as sophomores, most of them playing as sophomores.  Last year we played a really tough schedule and ended up 5-6.  They kept playing hard.  They kept believing in each other.  And they kept working hard and believing in the coaches.  They were rewarded with a great season.”

The game hinged around two key second half plays according to Coach DeLattre, and both plays were made by the Golden Tiger defense.  Trailing 28-21 at halftime, DuBois received the second half kickoff and a chance to tie the game, but misfortune reared its ugly head.  After a half the distance to the goal penalty put the ball at the ten, the Beavers ran for three yards.  On the next play, a pitchout went awry and Hollidaysburg recovered at the Beaver two-yard line.  Bainey scored on the second play and suddenly, early in the third quarter, Hollidaysburg went back up by two scores 35-21.

The second key play was on DuBois’s next possession.  The Beavers had driven to the Golden Tiger twelve and had a first down.  The Hollidaysburg defense chased the DuBois quarterback out of the pocket and was about to sack him when he threw a ball that was intercepted by Kayden McCrystal near the goal line and returned out to the sixteen.  “Those two plays really changed the game for us,” said DeLattre, “other than that, it was a pretty even game.”  Eight plays and 84 yards later, Brady Steiner gives Hollidaysburg a 42-21 lead by catching a TD toss from Bainey.

Pretty even it was, at least until the intermission.  Hollidaysburg received the opening kickoff and went 70 yards in nine plays, scoring on Baronner’s 10-yard scurry.  The extra point was wide and the visitors led 6-0.  DuBois answered with a 12-play drive that consumed 55 yards.  QB Trey Wingard did the honors on a quarterback sneak on 4th down.  Owen McCleary’s point after was good, giving the Beavers their only lead of the game, 7-6.

It took Hollidaysburg 11 seconds to score their next touchdown.  On the first play from scrimmage, Bainey found Cole DeLattre, who split the defense and outraced the DuBois safeties for an 80-yard touchdown pass and catch.  The Golden Tigers lined up for the extra point, but Bainey pulled the ball away and instead stood and fired a pass to Devin Jenkins for the successful 2-point conversion and a 14-7 lead.

After DuBois punted, the Beaver defense stepped up and stopped the Golden Tigers on 4th down as they had driven to the DuBois 30.  A subsequent sack pushed the ball back to the DuBois 38.  From there DuBois mounted a six-play drive aided by a 15-yard penalty, that culminated in a Wingard to Isaiah Korney 29-yard touchdown pass.  That score and McLeary’s point after tied the game at 14 early in quarter number two.

Hollidaysburg tried to get some breathing room by sandwiching two scores around a DuBois three and out.  The first one was a Bainey to Gavin Bell 35-yard touchdown toss.  That completed a 5-play drive that covered 65 yards.  The second was a one play drive.  Baronner, behind some good blocking, found daylight and raced 59 yards to put Hollidaysburg up by two scores 28-14.  “One play drives are good,” said DeLattre.  “He (Baronner) ran well.  He runs hard.  He’s been running hard all year long.  He’s deserving of a big night,” added Coach DeLattre.

DuBois bounced back to go into the locker room down by only seven at 28-21.  Beginning at their 40, after Korney recovered a fumble by Bainey, the Beavers traversed 60 yards in two minutes to score with 56 seconds left when Danny Dixon plowed in from two yards out.

The start of the second half, as DeLattre stated, turned the game to Hollidaysburg’s favor as DuBois made two crucial mistakes that the Golden Tiger defense capitalized upon, setting up the offense with an extremely short field by recovering a fumble and later stopping the Beavers offense in the red zone with an interception.

Each team scored a 4th quarter touchdown to set the final at 49-21. “It’s a great season for us so far,” said DeLattre, “we got high goals.”  Hollidaysburg looks to have a home playoff game with Taylor Allderdice next week.  DuBois, now 7-3, will have to travel to Erie and play Cathedral Prep in a first-round contest.  The winners play the following week, and there is a possibility Hollidaysburg will face DuBois again.

Both bands had very nice half time programs and are to be commended.
