Hollidaysburg overcomes 21 point deficit in wild victory over Delaware Valley

Early in the first quarter, Hollidaysburg saw themselves down 21-0. However, the Tigers did not quit. They overcame the deficit thanks to Carter Muth’s five touchdown performance as they defeated Delaware Valley 56-42 to advance to the PIAA 5A Quarterfinals for the second straight year. “This is a resilient group. We talk about character a lot and integrity. A good trait of a champion is being in control when adversity happens.” Said Hollidaysburg head coach Homer Delattre.
The scoring started on the opening kickoff as Trey Newton went 85 yards for a 7-0 Warriors lead. After a three and out for Hollidaysburg, Michael Iuzzolino scored from 28 yards out to make it 14-0 with 8:31 left in the first quarter. After another three and out by the Delaware Valley defense, Colin McGarvey finds Newton for a 25 yard touchdown and it’s 21-0 Warriors with 5:51 left in the first quarter.
The Tigers answered with a one yard touchdown run by Muth to cut the lead to 21-7. Just before the quarter ended, the Hollodaysburg defense got an interception by Kayden McCrystal. Muth got his second touchdown of the game from two yards out to make it 21-14 with 8:54 remaining in the second quarter. The momentum was going to the Tigers as their defense forced a punt and blocked it to give Hollidaysburg good field position. Muth tied the game on his third touchdown of the game from one yard out with 6:13 left in the second quarter.
The Warriors answered on the kickoff as Iuzzolino returned the kick 92 yards for the touchdown to give Delaware Valley back the lead at 28-21 with 6 minutes to go until halftime. On the Tigers drive, quarterback Cole Delattre scored from 89 yards out to tie the game up with 5:10 left in the second quarter. The Warriors went on a long drive, ending with McGarvey going to James Dabney for a 22 yard score to make it 35-28 with 48.9 seconds left before halftime. Hollidaysburg looked to answer before halftime but the drive ended with an interception by Colin McGarvey as Delaware Valley held the lead at halftime.
The Tigers got the ball to start the second half and drove down the field but faced a fourth down at the Warrior 22 yard line and Delattre finds Ethan Coke for the touchdown to tie the game at 35 with 10:29 remaining in the third quarter. Delaware Valley took back the lead with an Iuzzolino one yard touchdown down to make it 42-35 with 7:42 left in the third quarter.
Hollidaysburg tied the game up as Delattre found Ethan Coke for a 54 yard touchdown with 6:23 left in the third quarter. The Warriors looked to answer but McGarvey’s pass was intercepted by Josh Banks around midfield. The Tigers capitalized as Muth scored his fourth touchdown of the game from six yards out to make it 49-42 with 1:40 left in the third quarter. The Warriors looked to tie the game but faced a fourth down but the pass fell incomplete. Muth then scored his fifth touchdown of the game from 64 yards out to make it 56-42 with 8:52 remaining in the fourth quarter. On the next drive, McGarvey’s pass was intercepted by McCrystal for his second interception of the game with 4:55 remaining. After Delaware Valley’s defense forced a punt, the Warriors offense looked to pull within seven but the Tigers got the stop, then ran out the clock to take a 56-42 victory over Delaware Valley to advance to the PIAA 5A State Quarterfinals for the second straight season. Hollidaysburg goes to 13-0 on the season. Delaware Valley sees their season end at 7-6.
