A Review of the This Past Weekend’s Playoff Games in District XI and a Look Ahead to Five District Championships This Upcoming Weekend.

PIAA EASTERN CONFERENCE 4A CHAMPIONSHIP BANGOR 49 SAUCON VALLEY 14

Hollywood attended four District XI playoff games this past weekend, including a Thursday night Eastern Conference 4A Championship. My first ever trip to Paul Farnan field in Bangor to witness the Slaters capture the Championship with a 49-14 rout over Saucon Valley. A rematch of a regular season contest that was won by the Panthers 29-22. Behind the running of Kael Godsahalk’s 295 yards and along with quarterback Eric Striba, who combined for five touchdowns in the win.

PIAA DISTRICT XI 6A QUARTERFINAL BETHLEHEM FREEDOM 44 EASTON 14 BASD STADIUM

On Friday was another rematch from earlier in the season between the Red Rovers and the Patriots, and much like the first game Freedom won 31-17, this game was a no-contest as the Patriots dismantled the Rovers 44-17. A Deante Crawford touchdown run, followed by a Brian Taylor pass to Owen Johnson put the Pats up 14-0. A Zeyad Ragab 22 yard field goal and a pass from Taylor to Ethan Neidig made it 24-0. Crawford, who rushed for 193 yards score from fifteen yards out pretty much put the game out of reah by halftime as the Rovers trailed 30-7 at intermission.

PIAA EASTERN CONFERENCE 1A-2A CHAMPIONSHIP EXECUTIVE EDUCATION 34 HOLY CROSS 8 SCOTTY WOOD STADIUM, MUHLENBERG COLLEGE.

Saturday afternoon, the newly formed Executive Education Charter Raptors finished their inaugural season with a 6-5 record, by using their speed to take care of Holy Cross, out of District 2 34-8. Holy Cross’s game plan was to control the ball and the clock, which they did on the opening drive using up nearly seven minutes and workhorse running back Logan Tierney eating up yardage, culminating in a 23 yard score on a fourth and three play to give the visitors from Dunmore an 8-0 lead. Dontae Oquendo quickly erased that lead as he took the ensuing kickoff 80 yards to the house tying the score at 8. Oquendo also had a 27 yard score in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Darmel Jones threw for three touchdowns in the victory.

PIAA DISTRICT XI 3A SEMIFINAL JIM THORPE 26 NOTRE DAME GREEN POND 18

The Surprise of the night came in Easton as the Jim Thorpe Olympians avenged a 49-21 loss to the Crusaders on a Monday night in September as quarterback Colin Quintano threw for a school-record 501 yards and six touchdowns. Saturday night the visitors held him to just over 200 yards. Camron Tinajero had a couple of touchdown runs for the Olympians and Brett Balliet connected with Drew Wimmer for a 18 yard score with 4:32 left in the game to make it 26-18. The Crusaders had one last chance to tie the game with about a minute and a half left, but a fourth and goal pass from Quintano to Ryan Frinzi from the Jim Thorpe six was too high in the back of the end zone giving the upset win to the Olympians.
