EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED AFTER TWO WEEKS OF THE HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL SEASON IN THE EPC

After two weeks of the high school football season the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference, there are a few surprises that would be an eye-opener. First would be William Allen Canaries, after going 0-10 in 2023. The Canaries are 2-0 to start the 2024 campaign. Louis E Dieruff Huskies also came out of the gate for a 2-0 start. The Huskies were 3-7 last season and the Bethlehem Liberty Hurricanes remained unbeaten. Liberty was 2-8 last season. All three teams have winnable games this coming weekend.

Another surprise team is one of the winningest teams in the state, the Easton Red Rovers rolled over state-ranked Spring-Ford last Friday night. Freedom, Northampton, Emmaus and Emmaus picked up wins on Labor Day weekend. Stroudsburg also moved to 2-0 with a non-conference win over District 2’s Wilkes-Barre Area, in week one the Wolfpack took down Whitehall 27-13.

Let’s look back at week 2 and take a look ahead to the first weekend in September games for week 3:

THE EASTERN PENNSYLVANIA CONFERENCE WEEK 3 At A Glance:

EXETER TWP EAGLES (2-0) at PLEASANT VALLEY BEARS (0-2)

Exeter Twp are 2-0 and been very impressive giving up just seven points in 2024 by beating Daniel Boone 36-0 and Boyerttown 49-7. Pleasant Valley lost 40-26 to Louis Dieruff after blowing a lead. The Bears dense gave up over 250 yards of offense to the Huskies last week. Though QB Jaxson Hines tallied 140 yards of offense for PV with 70 yards through the air.

WHITEHALL ZEPHYRS (0-2) at EAST STROUDSBURG SOUTH CAVALIERS (1-1)

East Stroudsburg South lost a close decision to Northampton 24-21 while the Zephyrs dropped their second game 34-6 loss to Nazareth. ESS had leads over the Konkrete Kids by scores of 14-3 and 21-6, but couldn’t hold it in a tight loss. Charles Capers picked up nearly 200 yards and scored three times for the Cavs. The Zephs only converted two field goals in their loss to Nazareth. The Blue Eagles held Whitehall to under 60 yards rushing. The bright spot was Talon Dogmanits who caught 5 passes for 121 yards. QB Tanner Dogmanits was picked off three times and threw for 171 yards in the game.

STROUDSBURG MOUNTAINEERS (2-0) at BETHLEHEM LIBERTY HURRICANES SATURDAY NIGHT 7PM

The Mountaineers used a balanced attack to get the win over Wilkes-Barre Area out of District Two’s and the Wyoming Valley Conference. Ethan Dudsak and Kamari Coleman each caught two touchdown passes and Jaylin Rieara ran for two more in the 35-20 win. Liberty squeaked out a 15-14 win over Allentown Central Catholic. Jake Pukszyn had a touchdown reception and picked up 57 yards on five catches,

BERKS CATHOLIC SAINTS (1-1) at BETHLEHEM CATHOLIC GOLDEN HAWKS (1-1) THURSDAY NIGHT 7pm

Berks Catholic just got by Executive Education Charter last week 22-18 on a late touchdown in the 4th quarter. Becahi dropped a 31-21 loss to Emmaus last week. QB Cayden Vassa has thrown for over 300 yards on the young season and has six touchdown passes and has rushed for 162 yards as well.

ALLENTOWN CENTRAL CATHOLIC VIKINGS (1-) at BETHLEHEM FREEDOM PATRIOTS (2-0)

The Vikings dominated time of possession and but couldn’t put points up on the scoreboard against Freedom in a 15-14 loss as they only threw for under 60 yards and threw for nearly 160 yards in the contest. Freedom after an impressive opening game win on Staten Island over Torrey Pines (CA) came back to Pennsylvania and too care of business against a tough Parkland squad 30-13. QB Chase Walker threw for 2 scores in that game to give Freedom their 300 win in school history.

NORTHEAST PHILADELPHIA VIKINGS (2-0) at EASTON RED ROVERS (2-0)

Northeast took down West Catholic last week 26-18. Easton coming off one of the teams’ biggest win in recent years’ with a dominate 49-7 win over Spring-Ford Rams. William Day scored 3 times and Dorian Thomas scored twice in the win.

READING KNIGHTS (1-1) at EMMAUS GREEN HORNETS (1-1)

Reading evened their record at 1-1 with a 34-20 win over Muhlenberg last week after losing opening night 41-16 to Phoenixville. RB Reilly Bechtel picked up 144 yards and QB Jerek Cooper ran for 90 yards and threw a touchdown pass for Emmaus in a 31-21 win over Bethlehem Catholic.

PARKLAND TROJANS (1-1) at NORTHAMPTON KONKRETE KIDS

Parkland came up short to rival Bethlehem Freedom 30-13. Mistakes hurt the Trojans all night long against the Patriots. TL Lawrence ran for over 80 yards and picked up additional 51 receiving. Northampton slid by East Stroudsburg South 24-21. The K-Kids rallied twice in the game to get the win. Aiden Hess rushed for over 100 yards and place-kicker Aaron Gutkowski kicked the game-winning field goal.

WILLIAM ALLEN CANARIES (2-0) at EAST STROUDSBURG NORTH TIMBERWOLVES (0-2)

The Canaries are 2-0 for the first time in 22 years! They have a great chance to go 3-0 as they face a winless Timberwolves team. Kemahni Wimberly continue to do damage in the run game scoring twice in a 36-8 win over Thomas Edison out of Philadelphia last week. Zion Stokes caught a scoring pass as well. ESN is led by Zachary Deresky-Martinez rushing for 201 yards in two games. and QB Wayne King has thrown for 168 yards to open the season.

POCONO MOUNTAIN EAST CARDINALS (0-2) at SCRANTON KNIGHTS (2-0)

PME were taken down by another District 2 team Honesdale Honets 43-20 last week. Rocco DelGuidice has thrown for 450 yards on the season and RB Stephen Bethea has rushed for 233 yards. Scranton dominated Wyoming Valley West last week 36-13.

POCONO MOUNTAIN WEST PANTHERS (1-1) at LOUIS DIERUFF HUSKIES (2-0)

PMW struggled against Belmont Charter last week from Philadelphia in a 9-0 win. The Panthers did miss a field goal and had a costly turnover as a scoring chance went by the wayside. Dieruff went to 2-0 with a 40-26 win over Pleasant Valley. The Huskies can go 3-0 for the first time since 1992.

WILSON WEST LAWN BULLDOGS (2-0) at NAZARETH BLUE EAGLES (2-0)

Traditional District 3 powerhouse Wison West Lawn comes to Andrew Leh Stadium on Friday night opening with two wins as they took down Cheltenham 28-28 in week one and then a 21-7 win over Plymouth-Whitemarsh. The Eagles are loaded on offense with QB Peyton Falzone leading the way and WR Caleb Newsome leading the way.
