Even on a cold, windy night, Bulldogs used passing game to vault over West Catholic to move on in the PIAA 2A playoffs.

WHITEHALL TWP- On a night with the air temperature was 35 degrees and with the wind chill it felt like 15. Coach Joe Tout, decided to against convention and just pound the ball against West Catholic Friday night at Zephyr Stadium and went with a passing attack which produced three first half scores en route to a 48-24 victory. The win allowed the Bulldogs to advance to the PIAA State 2A semifinals next week against state powerhouse and four time defending state champion Southern Columbia Tigers (13-1) at a site and time to be determined. The Tigers dominated Richland 62-20.

With West Catholic receiving the opening kickoff, neither team could muster a first down, on their opening drives, but on the Bulldogs second possession quarterback Dylan Smoyer, tossed a lateral to Nick Frame, who then lofted a pass to a wide open Trevor Amorim for a 54 yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead and the 9:22 mark.

The Burrs were forced to punt the next time they had the ball, and Amorim flashed down the sidelines for a 29 yard score, Brett Misera made the point-after for a 14-0 lead with 4:46 still to play in the first quarter. Smoyer completed two passes on the drive a part of the team completing 11 of 15 passes for 209 yards and three touchdowns on the night.

“We knew had to loosen up their defense. We had to change it up seeing what was on film of the Conwell-Egan game. They didn’t throw the ball until they had to and York Catholic tried running right at them which didn’t work. We had to spread them right more and it was something they didn’t pick up on.” Coach Tout stated.

The next two times either team had the ball ended with interceptions. The Bulldogs took adavantage of their turnover when Smoyer found Austin Smyth in the south end zone for a 22 yard pass and a 21-0 lead with 1:23 left. Smoyer was 10 of 14 passing and 155 yards with 2 scores.

The scoring onslaught continued in the second quarter for Northern Lehigh as Smoyer dropped off a nice screen pass to fullback Mat Frame, who broke a couple of tackles near the line of scrimmage and bolted his way to the end zone for a 63 yard score and a 28-0 lead just 1:51 into the period.

West Catholic then finally got their offense in gear as quarterback Zymeen Howell hooked up with Naidir Hilliad for a 54 yard score and cut the lead to 28-7 at the 8:30 mark. That score would hold up till intermission.

“They were fighting each other from the start and I saw their heads go down after our first score. They acted pretty confident in pregame but that ended quickly.” Frame stated.

Both teams had trouble holding onto the ball coming out in the second half as they traded fumbles. Again, the Dawgs cashed in theirs on a two yard run by Amorim, with Frame pick picking up 32 yards on consecutive carries on the drive.

Northern Lehigh had a chance to put the game in mercy rule mode after another two yard Amorim score, but the two-point conversion was snuffed out leaving the score 41-8 with 11:53 left in the contest. Frame ended up with 111 yards on 14 carries and Amorim added 64 yards on 16 touches and three scores.

The Burrs did get two fourth quarter scores on a K’saan Greene 57 yard run as part of his 157 yards on the night while carrying the ball 23 times and a Jiare Greene 18 yard jaunt he ended the night with 42 yards. The Bulldogs closed out the scoring on a 1 yard quarterback sneak by Smoyer with 2:55 left.
