In What is Becoming a Rivalry, DuBois Defeats Brockway with Balanced Attack

After splitting close games with Brockway, the past two years in front of huge crowds, the DuBois Beavers upended the Rovers 38-24 before a near packed house at Frank Varischetti Field in Brockway on a clear, but chilly Friday night.  Led by Danny Dixon’s 205 yards rushing and Trey Wingard’s 297 yards passing, the Beavers’ balanced attack kept the Brockway defense off balance most of the evening.

Wingard is #10 and Dixon #34 in white.

“Our game plan was to try to be as balanced as we could.  We just wanted to see what they would give us defensively,” said the DuBois head coach, TJ Wingard.  DuBois chalked up nearly 550 yards with Dixon and Wingard being responsible for most of them.  When Coach Wingard found out Dixon had rushed for over 200 yards, he said, “That’s awesome!”

In talking with some fans and coaches, this game is becoming somewhat of a rivalry game since the communities are so close and the players know each other fairly well, not only because of football but other sports as well.  It appears it is something each side really looks forward to.

The DuBois defense came out on fire limiting Brockway to 23 yards on their first five possessions, including four three and outs.  Brockway then started to click and their quarterback, Aiden Patton, made some plays possible due to his scrambling ability and keeping his eyes downfield for an open receiver.  “He made some tremendous plays,” stated Coach Wingard.  Even though DuBois sacked Patton four times, he was able to free himself from at least four other possible sacks to complete passes downfield.

DuBois took command right away.  After the defense forced a Brockway punt, the offense drove 86 yards, scoring on Trey Wingard’s one-yard pass to Brysen Delaney.  The Beavers followed that up with a 30-yard field goal by Kyan Peck and led after the first quarter of play 10-0.

The second quarter saw DuBois up their lead to 17-0 when Dixon took the handoff and broke open to the outside, and then tiptoeing his way down the sidelines for a 78-yard touchdown.  DuBois got the ball back again after Brockway’s fourth punt, but that drive fizzled at the Rover 46.

It was then Brockway found something offensively.  They used the clock wisely and drove 82 yards in three minutes, scoring on Blake Pisarcik’s 3-yard run with only 34 seconds left in the half.  A trick play was tried on the PAT attempt.  The ball was actually snapped to the kicker, Caleb Dougherty, who threw a pass that was just off the receiver’s fingertips in the end zone.

Brockway about to score their first TD. DuBois in white.

DuBois quickly moved into field goal range, but Peck’s 43-yard attempt was wide left.  So, with momentum seemingly being on Brockway’s side, the teams went into their locker rooms with DuBois leading 17-6.

The Beavers came out in the third quarter and methodically moved the ball down field taking up five and a half minutes in driving 67 yards to score what would turn out to be the only points of the third quarter.  Dixon did the honors again as he scored his second touchdown, this time on a short run of four yards.

The score was now in the favor of DuBois, 24-6, heading into the last stanza of play.  And just like that DuBois scored again early in the fourth quarter to increase their advantage to 31-6 on Nathan Kougher’s 21-yard touchdown pass reception.

Brockway did not ‘pack it in’ as they say.  Instead, they drove 77 yards in six plays to put up their second touchdown when Patton found Daugherty for a 32-yard scoring strike.

The subsequent on side kick was actually returned a few yards settin up DuBois at the Brockway 42.  Carter Wilson eventually put DuBois back on top by 26 points when he plunged in from a yard out three plays later making the score 38-12.

Patton, then made the play of the night for Brockway.  He scrambled around, breaking the hold of a couple of DuBois pass rushers looking for a sack, and flicked a pass downfield to Pisarcik who had gotten a step on the defense and raced to the end zone to complete the amazing 67-yard touchdown.

The Rovers recovered a DuBois fumble as the Beavers were driving and turned it into the final points of the night when Patton connected with Aiden Snowberger on a 38-yard pass over the middle.  Snowberger was then able to keep running across the field to outrun the defenders chasing him and make it to the end zone.

“Brockway’s kids play hard and they’re very good and they’re going to have a good playoff run,” stated Coach Wingard, “It’s turned into a little rivalry.”  Brockway ended up with 343 yards of offense with 320 of it coming on their last five possessions.

Two DuBois wideouts had 23 catches and 228 yards between them.  Nathan Kougher grabbed 12 passes for 138 yards, while Brysen Delaney snared 11 passes for 90 yards.  Blake Pisarcik led the Rover receivers with 4 catches for 115 yards.

Wingard and Patton are two of the top statistical quarterbacks in the state.  They did not disappoint the fans.  Wingard ended up being 28 of 38 for 297 yards and a pair of TD tosses.  Patton completed 13 passes out of 23 attempts for 298 yards and three touchdowns.

DuBois is now 7-2 and will host 8-1 Hollidaysburg next Friday in the regular season finale.  Brockway’s record fell to 5-4 and they will be home against Smethport who is 1-7.
