North Jackson – Jackson-Milton opened their 2023 campaign with a 27-0 shutout victory over Mathews High School.

Blue Jays quarterback Cayden Mitchell threw three first-half touchdown passes, including two to Jonah French from 37 and 22 yards out.

Mitchell completed 8-of-12 passes for 138 yards and three scores, while French finished the night with two receptions for 59 yards and two touchdowns.

On the first snap of the second quarter, on fourth down, Mitchell connected with Joey Zayas, who caught a short pass and then outraced the Mustangs’ defense for a 39-yard touchdown capping off a 9-play 84-yard drive.

After receiving the second-half kickoff, the Blue Jays put the game away on a 5-play 58-yard drive when Aiden Stanke scored on a 16-yard run with 9:16 to play in the third stanza.

Around the midway point of the fourth quarter, a torrential downpour began soaking everyone in attendance and on the field – the teams played until the game was called with 1:16 to play due to nearby thunder and lightning.

Mathews struggle to move the ball throughout the evening amassing only 24 first offensive yards.
