MILFORD — Last week was about as good of a season opener as the Jersey Shore (2-0) Bulldogs could have asked for, pulling off a dominating 27-7 win over Dallas (PA). But this week was going to be a real test, as the Bulldogs traveled 3 hours on the road to take on the Delaware Valley Warriors (0-2).
Delaware Valley came into today’s game coming off a major 52-24 loss to McKeesport, and were looking to try and right the ship by scoring a big bounce back win in their home opener.
Early on the Bulldogs took control, scoring on their second drive of the game thanks to a Kash Herrit 35-yard run, before eventually taking a 28-7 lead right before the half.
However, with halftime looming large the Warriors grabbed a little bit of momentum back, driving down the length of the field in 1:43 of game time to score a TD right before half. The score coming thanks to a great toe tapping catch by Warriors receiver Trey Newton to make the score 28-14.
Out of the half Jersey Shore completely took control of the game, scoring on their 3 drives of the quarter to go up 42-21. But what felt like a safe lead quickly turned to a nail-biter, as the Warriors offense came alive, scoring 21 straight and bringing the game back within seven points.
Delaware Valley leaned heavily on their run game to get them back into the game, with their backfield trio of QB Colin McGarvey, RB Mike Iuzzlino, and fullback Justin Estevez began tearing up the Bulldog defense.
One stalled Shore drive later and Delaware Valley had the ball with a chance to either tie or take the lead with 1:50 remaining. On 3rd and 10 Bulldogs Safety/Quarterback Nolan Pauling made a great play to knock the ball out of Warriors star receiver Trey Newton’s hands to force a 4th and long with just under a minute and thirty seconds remaining. On what ended up being the final play of the game McGarvey fired a pass behind James Dabney near the sticks. The Bulldogs would go on to run out the clock and clinch their second win in as many games.
The star of the game for Jersey Shore was running back Kash Herrit, Herrit opened up the scoring with a 35-yard touchdown run on the Bulldogs second drive of the game. He also scored two other touchdowns in the 3rd quarter, one from 13-yards out and the other a 5-yard run.
Alongside Herrit Shore QB Nolan Pauling turned in another great performance, keeping the Bulldogs offense humming, while also reeling in a huge interception in the third quarter. After which he would be taken off the field due in large part to a hard hit he took on the end of the play. But luckily disaster was avoided as Jersey Shore head coach Tom Gravish said after the game it was simply just cramps. After being out for two plays Pauling would return to the game with seemingly no issue.
After the game coach Gravish reiterated that while it may not have been easy, they were happy to walk out with the win.
“These are games that are hard to win, but you gotta celebrate all wins, and we are going to do that here. We worked our tails off to get this and we knew it would not be easy.”
Next Friday’s game won’t get much easier, as next week they will have to travel on the road to take on Selinsgrove (0-2) on the road. That game is currently scheduled for a 7 p.m. start time on Friday, Sept. 5th
