GRSN Non-PIAA Game of the Week

Peddie School Falcons(1-1) Hightstown, NJ  at Kiski School Cougars (1-2)

Last Meeting 9/23/24 Kiski 0 @ Peddie 32

PSF PF 19.5 PA 21.5

KSC PF 11.3  PA 27.3

I saw the Cougars three weeks ago for their home opener, mainly to see local star Levi Porter. I have covered probably 9-10 Kiski games in the past 6-7 years. It is Pennsylvania High School Football but quicker and faster hitting. Kiski had very little practice, was playing a very good team and had about a 1/3 of the number of players for the opener. They looked bad in the opener. That being said they hung with Calvert Hall before allowing a couple of defensive fourth quarter touchdowns. Porter played well, but I commented to my cousin they were going to need to fine a passing game to open up the running attack. Three Weeks later and the Cougars easily handle the Peddie Falcons on Homecoming. They were able to make some big plays in the passing game, run very well (especially in the first half) and played lights out defense.

The Cougars have about a 26 man roster (half are from other countries), a hand full of coaches and a very tough schedule. That isn’t a good recipe for success. Head Coach David “Bo” Buran has turned the season around with back to back wins. I’m going to post a lot of pictures on my Facebook Page, check them out. Look at the offensive line in the pictures, there is a black shirt (Kiski is in black) on a white shirt in every photo. The Cougars only have six linemen (1 from the US) over 225 pounds. On defense they swarm to the ball, if someone misses a tackle, someone else is there to make it. They are very well coached. They freely substitute the majority of their bench and the young men are the best.

The first quarter took an hour to play. After a long delay due to lightning, there were five penalties on the first six plays and a number of minor injuries. They had problems were the chains and the clock. The Cougars took the ball and marched 69 yards in four minutes with Levi Porter scoring the games first touchdown. They mixed Porter’s power running with some jet sweeps and one pass which went for a nice gain. German born kicker Leo Bruggeman kicked the extra point.

The Falcons had a four minute drive on their opening possession too. They went from their own 23 to the Cougars 23 before turning in over on downs. The drive was highlighted by a series of Cougars miss tackles (which led to a defensive timeout) and a defensive PI. The Cougars would take the ball and would go 77 yards this time. The big play was a Porter 50 yard run. New quarterback Mason Smith would run the ball for the first time all day and score from four yards out.

Individual Stats for the Quarter

Porter 6 rushes 77 yards, two tackles(1 on special teams)

Bruggeman 2 for 2 on extra points and a long kickoff.

The second quarter was scoreless. The Falcons drove inside the Cougars 20 on their second possession, a drive that started in the first quarter. Ahmad Ragland made a nice tackle along the Kiski sideline after a long pass and stripped the Peddie wide receiver. Porter was there to recover the ball. Both teams had two more possessions in the quarter and punted on both.

Individual Stats for the Quarter

Porter 5 rushes 39 yards, in on several tackles

Bruggeman 2  punts for 102 yards

The third quarter started with Peddie fumbling deep in their own territory and Belgium born linebacker Emanuel Safikhany recovering the ball at the Falcon 28. Peddie made some nice defensive adjustments after the first quarter and the Cougars could not move the ball on this drive. My new Kiski friend Leo Bruggeman then kicked a 44 yard field goal to make it a three score lead.

The rest of the third quarter went quickly . Both teams had one possession. The Falcons drive was stopped by a series of sacks and they punted. The Cougars used up the rest of the third quarter before punting at the start of the fourth quarter.

Individual Stats for the Quarter

Porter 2 rushes 3 yards, in on several tackles

Bruggeman 2 long kickoffs and 44 yard FG

The fourth quarter took forever to play with stoppages every couple of seconds. After a 52 yard Bruggeman punt, the Falcons quarterback was swarmed over by the Cougars forcing a punt out of their own end zone which went only 14 yards. Kiski starting at the Peddie 15 wasted no time in scoring. Smith scored his second touchdown of the game. Peddie punted again and the Cougars took advantage of the short field thanks to #13. Bruggeman connected from 49 yards this time.

Peddie scored a late touchdown as both teams were playing some backups. This Kiski team was definitely a different team from week one.

Individual Stats for the Quarter

Porter  in on several tackles

Bruggeman 2 long kickoff, 49yard FG and 52 yard punt

Game Notes

-It was the third time in a row at Kiski that the game has been delayed due to lightning. It happen right after the National Anthem. The time before all the lightning, the visiting teams bus broke down and they had to send a bunch of vans to pick them up.

-The chain gang was made of up students, one was from Mexico and I believe the other young man I talked to was from Spain. They thought they all moved after every play, but it got fixed. Hopefully next timeI go to Kiski they will be on the chains again.
