The Laurel Spartans earned a 40-21 win over the Chartiers-Houston Buccaneers to advance to the WPIAL 1A Semifinals. Four different Spartans— Kolton Carlson, Jack Miles, Luca Santini and JJ McBride— all found the end zone.
Carlson, a senior, had a long reception to set up a 5-yard touchdown run of his own for the first score of the game.
On the first play of the second quarter, Carlson later took a handoff, looked to pass, and threw a touchdown to Josh Sherman, but it was called back due to an ineligible man downfield.
That drive stalled out, but Laurel was still the next team to put points up on the board, which came in the form of a Jack Miles 23-yard touchdown run late in the first half. Chartiers-Houston had a promising drive going in the waning moments of the first half, but quarterback Aaron Walsh threw an interception to sophomore Tony Geiwitz, helping Laurel preserve a 14-0 lead into halftime.
Carlson scored a 27-yard touchdown to put Laurel up 21-0 early in the third, the first of three touchdowns over a three-minute span. Walsh threw a 20-yard touchdown to Junior Brody McCrerey to make it 21-7, followed by a Luca Santini touchdown putting Laurel back up by 21.
Walsh and McCrerey connected again for six on the first play of the fourth quarter from 12 yards out, but Miles scored his second touchdown of the game quickly after to make it 34-14.
Jack Miles 14-yard touchdown run. His second of the night.
