The last time Lewisburg started the season 5-0 was in 2010. They won the district title over Danville that year before eventually losing to West Catholic in the state playoffs. Last night at Defender Stadium the Green Dragons reached the 5-0 mark with a 24-0 shut out win over Warrior Run. It’s been very lean for the program since that year, but head coach Eric Wicks has the program heading in what appears to be the correct direction. “Just getting the guys to buy into team atmosphere. The biggest thing they had to understand is this is the ultimate team sport” said Wicks of what it took to turn the program around. “They have to understand what their job is. Our biggest motto is “you don’t have to do every job, you just have to do your job every time”.

The Green Dragon defense took control of the game from the opening drive forcing Warrior Run to punt after three plays. Lewisburg running back Jeremiah Davis carried the ball six times for 43 yards before quarterback Chase Wenrich found Jaylen Walker for the first score of the game, a 36 yard pitch and catch. The kick made it a 7-0 lead for the visiting team.

The Lewisburg defense stepped up again on the next Warrior drive when Tyler Kitchens picked off a tipped James Keifer pass at the Lewisburg 17. The Green Dragons managed to get to the Defender 39 before punting. On the next play Warrior Run fumbled and Lewisburg capitalized with a 33 yard field goal by Landon Tillson giving them a 10-0 lead with four minutes remaining in the first half.

Both teams attempted fake punts in the first half, neither of which were successful. However, Warrior Runs attempt at the fake came with just under a minute to play. You could say the home team got lucky when the 48 yard field goal attempt went wide with just seconds left in the half. Lewisburg took a 10-0 lead into the break.

The second half started with a bang for Lewisburg. On the second play of the third quarter freshman receiver Owen Fellon took a short swing pass from Wenrich and was off to the races down the sideline for a 77 yard td catch giving the Green Dragons a commanding 17-0 lead.

“A young guy like him, to be able to make big plays that’s just going to make him better in the long run” said Wicks of the freshman receiver. Warrior run finally had a drive with meaning after that play, getting all the way to the Lewisburg 19 before missing a field goal. The game action then slowed for a few series. Then the Green Dragon defense slammed the door shut forcing another turnover. Xavier Carter picked off Keifer at the Lewisburg three and returned the ball to the 49, halting the best Defender drive of the night late in the fourth quarter. Davis, who ran for 123 yards on 21 carries, put the finishing touches on the game with a 25 yard td run.

“That defense is playing good all year. They started to turn it up at the end of last year. Let’s just say those guys are firing on all cylinders. We had some trouble with the pass game but we corrected that and it showed tonight” said Wicks.

Lewisburg faces another huge test next Friday when they host 4-1 Loyalsock. Warrior Run will look to bounce back while hosting North-Penn Mansfield.
