While a storm passed by overhead BASD Stadium Thursday night, the Liberty Hurricanes stormed past East Stroudsburg North. Mason Kennedy’s 52-yard punt return for touchdown on a heavily pressured kick was just a microcosm of how dominant Liberty was.
The game was pushed back 30 minutes due to thunderstorms that pushed through the area during warmups. Liberty didn’t miss a beat. After holding the Timberwolves to a three-and-out, Antonio Fontanez hit Zyaire Davis for a 30-yard score over the middle for the quick 7-0 lead with 8:52 to go in the first.
Liberty’s second drive began on the North 29. Fontanez connected with Jake Pukszyn three plays later for an 18-yard touchdown on the same exact play.
Things did not improve for the Timberwolves. Six of their seven first half drives ended in punts and they did not muster a first down. Punter Jayden Ramos was under constant durress throughout the night, having to hold off a defender to get a kick away from his own 10-yard line.
With a 14-0 lead, Liberty took over on the Timberwolves’ 20. Three plays later, Mekkhi McKenzie scored from two yards out. The first quarter ended with the Hurricanes leading 21-0.
On his next punt attempt, Ramos tried to handle another low snap. He was caught in the backfield and thrown down at his own six. An impressive defensive stand forced a 23-yard field goal try from the Hurricanes, but Jonte Bowe caught the short touchdown pass on a fake to put his team up 28-0.
One play later, Ahmir Middleton took the ball out of Austin Finnerty’s hands and raced to the end zone 30 yards for the score and a 34-0 lead with 8:50 to play in the half.
The final score of the first half came when Fontanez made a short pass to Christian Contakes for a 3-yard score.
At the half, East Stroudsburg Norht was held to 12 net offensive yards and no first downs.
The Timberwolves picked up a couple of first downs in the third quarter, but their most promising drive ended with Ramos scrambling in his backfield to handle another low punt snap. He got a kick away that landed right in the chest of Mason Kennedy, who took it 52 yards to pay dirt for the final score of the night.
