Week 2 ACC v Liberty by PAFootball Newsdotcom

Trailing 14-7 in the second quarter, the Liberty Hurricanes rattled off 31 unanswered points on their way to a 38-14 victory over the Central Catholic Vikings. A 73-yard touchdown run by Liberty QB Antonio Fontanez was the proverbial nail in the coffin.

Following an early gamble that didn’t pan out for the Vikings, Liberty took over on the ACC 28. Gabe Green finished off a seven play drive with a 1-yard touchdown plunge that put Liberty on top 7-0 with 8:03 to play in the first quarter.

Central Catholic responded with a 16 play drive that covered 80 yards. Tate Shoemaker finished off the game-tying drive with a 2-yard touchdown run.

Shoemaker then picked off Fontanez on a third and long play, running it nearly back to the house. Deon Johnson took it the last seven yards to put the Vikings up 14-7.

After a 26-yard field goal made it 14-10, Liberty’s next drive went 17 plays, as Adriaan De Leon put the Canes on top 17-14 with :22 left in the first half.

Liberty opened the second half with a long kickoff return near midfield and was aided by a Vikings personal foul. With the good field position, it took just five plays before Fontanzes hooked up with Jake Pukszyn for an 11-yard score in the back corner of the end zone. Liberty led 24-14, beginning to get the separation they would need on the scoreboard.

Two plays later, Zyaire Davis picked off Patrick Cahill and two play after that, Jaxon Barlok caught a 53-yard touchdown pass from Fontanez. That made the score 31-14 with 7:35 to play in the third.

Central Catholic then drove into the red zone, but an intentional grounding call made it 4th & Goal on the 20. With a turnover on downs, the Hurricanes were in control.

Fontanez sealed the deal two plays later, when he ran untouched, 73-yards to the end zone.

Fontanez finished his night going 12/21 through the air for 168 yards and two scores. On the ground, he ran for 74 yards and a touchdown. Adriaan De Leon ran for 130 yards, while Gabe Green added 109. Zyaire Davis led all receivers, catching six balls for 87 yards. Liberty committed only two penalties on the night, playing a clean game.

Liberty held the Vikings to 134 rushing yards and Cahill went 6/14 for 116 through the air.

Liberty(1-1) will go on the road at Stroudsburg next Friday night. The Vikings will host Freedom next Saturday evening.
