Danville’s record setting quarterback, Madden Patrick, celebrated his birthday Friday at Tiger Stadium in Hollidaysburg by leading his Ironmen to a 28-21 victory over the Golden Tigers.  All Patrick did was account for Danville’s four touchdowns by throwing for three and running for the other.  He completed 18 of 28 passes for 343 yards and had one pick.  He now has over 2,100 yards passing for the season.

The game didn’t start well for the Ironmen as they were forced to punt on the initial series of the game and Hollidaysburg blocked the punt into the end zone where Brady Steiner fell on the ball for a Tiger touchdown at the 10:26 mark.  Paul Wedel booted the first of three extra points and Hollidaysburg had its only lead of the game, 7-0.

Each team’s next two possessions resulted in no points but with Hollidaysburg getting the better of play.  Then after stopping the Golden Tigers on 4th down at the Ironmen 38, Danville embarked on a 62-yard touchdown drive that ended with Patrick scoring on a 3-yard run to tie the game with eleven seconds left in the opening quarter after Garrett Hoffman’s PAT.

The second stanza was scoreless up until the last two minutes.  However, the Danville defense started playing a bit better and began limiting yardage by the Tigers.  The Danville offense began a drive late in the quarter at their own 18.  Immediately after securing a first down to the 32, Patrick hit Aaron Johnson for 10 yards and Johnson spun away from a tackle, made another Tiger defender miss, ran across the field where he found an opening and sprinted down the Hollidaysburg sideline to complete a magnificent 68-yard touchdown.  With 2:07 left in the half Danville had its first lead 14-7.

Danville then forced Hollidaysburg into a three and out and the Golden Tiger punt was returned about 20 yards by Cole Duffy.  On the very next play, Patrick found Johnson again with the result being a 44-yard touchdown with 33 seconds remaining.  Now Danville had a cushion and led 21-7 at the half.

Hollidaysburg came to play as the saying goes.  They proved the point when Jack Steiner returned the second half kick 97 yards for a touchdown, and more importantly, cut the Danville margin down to one score.  The Ironmen answered by driving into Tiger real estate but Drew Wyland intercepted a Patrick pass in the end zone.  Danville’s next series began in the third quarter at their own 24.  It ended in the fourth quarter when Patrick threw his third TD of the night to Johnson, a 2-yarder.  That touchdown pass by Patrick put him unofficially in the record books as Danville’s single season record holder for TD passes with 34.  For the game, Johnson caught four passes for 125 yards.  Again, Danville went up by two scores 28-14.  Again, Hollidaysburg answered.

The Golden Tigers took advantage of Danville’s fourth turnover of the night when the ball was hiked over Patrick’s head and Brayden Berkheimer recovered for the Tigers.  H’burg put the ball in the end zone when Jay Albarano made a nice catch of a Drew Wyland pass in the back of the end zone.  So, with 2:41 left the score was 28-21 Danville.

The subsequent onside kick went out of bounds and the Ironmen took over at the Hollidaysburg 49.  They notched one first down before turning the ball over on downs.  But all the Tigers could manage was a 15-yard penalty for roughing the passer.  That put the ball into Ironmen territory, but time ran out after the 3rd straight incomplete pass.

Seven times Hollidaysburg had the ball in Danville territory and came away with zero points.  That includes at the end of each half when time ran out.  Wyland passed for 117 yards and ran for 56 more to pace the Hollidaysburg offense.  Danville outgained Hollidaysburg though 426 to 242 yards thanks to the passing yardage put up by Patrick.

Danville, who is ranked # 7 in AAA by PFN, finishes the regular season next week at home against Executive Education Academy (4-5).  The Ironmen are 8-1.  The Danville faithful are saying that Hollidaysburg may be the best 3-win team in the state as their five losses are to teams with a combined record of 38-3-1.  Three of the five teams are still unbeaten in 2023.  They are Westinghouse, Selinsgrove, and Ft. Hill, MD.  The Golden Tigers host DuBois (4-5) in their season finale.
