Guys Mills – Maplewood bounced back from back-to-back shutout losses with a 27-6 victory over Reynolds Saturday afternoon.

The offense has been challenging this season for the Tigers, scoring only 19 points in their first four games – Maplewood put together their best offensive showcase thus far, amassing 248 yards and four touchdowns.

“We’ve been working hard, and the kids have never stopped believing,” said Maplewood head coach Jason Wargo. “We’ve had to make some changes and move some people around. We finally found some rhythm on offense, which paid off for us.”

Coming into Saturday’s contest, the Tigers had only scored three touchdowns.

The air attack of Kyle Jordan to Dorian Doubet provided the majority of the scoring as all seven of Jordan’s completions went to Doubet, who caught a game-high 166 yards on seven receptions, scoring three times.

“Kyle kept looking for him, and they found each other today,” Wargo said. “Sometimes there were some other guys open, but Kyle knows Dorian is a senior leader, and he has all the confidence in him as he should. Anytime you have a freshman at quarterback, he will look for the offense’s leader. Based on what they were doing on defense, he was the open guy.”

After both teams played through a scoreless first quarter, the Tigers had the icebreaker following an interception by Landon Lentz when Doubet caught a 34-yard touchdown from Jordan with 8:26 to play in the first half.

It marked the fourth straight drive where the Tigers had begun in Raiders territory.

“That touchdown was big,” said Wargo. “The field never flipped into Reynolds territory until late in the first half. We knew we had to take advantage of our field position before halftime. Fortunately, we could do just that heading into the locker room.”

Reynolds had an opportunity to tie or take the lead heading into halftime as they took over following a punt with 2:23 to play in the half, starting at their 47-yard line.

The Raiders drove 30 yards, but Doubet intercepted backup quarterback Connor Belbecks’s pass at the 1-yard line. Starting quarterback Gavin Alabran had been injured earlier in the drive.

“That was a big play. We knew we wanted the lead going into halftime,” Wargo said. “Our kids knew the game wasn’t over by any stretch, but that sequence was huge for our confidence.”

Alabran would return for the second half and led the Raiders with 103 yards rushing on 17 carries while completing 2-of-11 passes for 14 yards with an interception.

Taking the football to begin the second half, the Tigers drove 40 yards in five plays when Jordan hit Doubet for a 32-yard touchdown.

The Raiders responded by marching 65 yards in nine plays when Travis Blackburn capped the drive with a 2-yard run, pulling Reynolds to within 14-6 at the 5:04 mark of the third quarter.

Blackburn rushed for 35 yards on ten carries, while Gabriel Minjarez chipped in with 46 yards on 13 totes.

Andrew Proper, who led the Tigers in rushing, scored on a 23-yard run on the succeeding possession as Maplewood took a 20-6 lead into the final stanza. Proper rushed for 76 yards on 18 carries.

Doubet and Jordan completed an outstanding afternoon in the fourth quarter as they connected for their third score, this one from 59 yards out with 5:35 to play.

Maplewood will look to keep the momentum going when they travel to Mercer next Friday night.

Reynolds will look to snap their 3-game skid when they host Kennedy Catholic.

“I’m not going to make excuses,” said Reynolds head coach Josh Mull. “We had three mental breakdowns on defense. We need to learn from our growing pains both on offense and defense. We need to ensure that our players understand that they just had a mental breakdown and move on and learn from it. Hopefully, these kids will continue to have the right attitude as we move on with our season.”
