Marion Center comes back late in the fourth quarter to knock off Cambria Heights 29-22 at Cambria Heights Stadium in round one of the District six 2A playoffs.
After a 26-25 final in week four favoring the Stingers, the Highlanders were looking for revenge.
The Highlanders dominated at first, but the wild wind set up an eight yard punt, giving Marion Center a ton of momentum. Cambria Heights regained the lead in the second half, but in the final three minutes, the Stingers scored 15 points to tie it and win.
“We had our opportunities in the fourth quarter,” Cambria Heights coach Jarrod Lewis replied. “Offensively we had a drive there and if we get a first down we can keep killing the clock. Defensively we’ve just got to make some plays. That’s what it comes down to.”
The Highlanders moved the ball very well the opening drive. Nolan Clawson threw a screen to Brayden DeArmitt for a 34 yard gain and then Clawson ran it in from four yards out.
Cambria Heights forced another punt and drove right back down the field. Then Marion Center got a big fourth down stop inside their own 30.
That didn’t matter, resulting in another punt. Their defense held strong though and then Cambria Heights punted it off of their own player, resulting in just an eight yard punt.
With great field position, Camden Rising hit Troy Slovinsky for a 19 yard gain and then found Alec Brudnock for a 22 yard touchdown to tie the game.
Then the Stingers forced a three and out and got the ball right back. Rising hit Brudnock on a screen for a big 36 yard gain and then Rising punched it in from a yard out.
Following halftime, Cambria Heights immediately drove down the field. Kaiden Ivory hit Carson Lobick for a big 38 yard play and then found Clawson in the endzone for a 23 yard touchdown.
The Highlanders got the ball back, but immediately punted. The wind played another huge role, going 73 yards. That set up the Stingers at their one. The first play of that drive was fumbled and Marion Center recovered in the endzone, resulting in a safety.
Cambria Heights quickly found the endzone again as Ivory found Brayden DeArmitt for a 37 yard touchdown. With the chance to make it a two score lead with the extra point, Brudnock blocked the attempt, keeping the score 22-14.
Both teams exchanged the ball three times each with hectic punts ranging from four yards to 60.
Marion Center got the ball with under three minutes to go. Rising hit Slovinsky and he made two moves taking it 51 yards for a touchdown. Then Rising tied up the game with a run to the outside for the two point conversion.
Cambria Heights attempted to win the game with their two minute offense, but on their fifth play of the drive, Slovinsky intercepted it.
The next play, Rising threw a deep ball to Brudnock and he took it all the way for a go-ahead 86 yard touchdown.
“Earlier in the third quarter I got him to bite on my slant fake, so I knew that would be there,” Brudnock explained. “Cam threw a perfect ball and to be honest with you I thought they were going to catch me.”
The Highlanders got two first downs, but on the final play of the game, Slovinsky intercepted it again.
“It was definitely a dog fight back and forth,” Marion Center coach Adam Rising stated. “I thought our defense stepped up really well. They played the run game really well which is their strength. Credit to Coach Lewis and staff. It’s just a great football game for us to come back and get our playmakers the ball in space.”
Marion Center moves on to take on Bishop McCort-Carroll in the semi finals.
