You would be hard-pressed to write a better script for Claysburg-Kimmel quarterback Mason Campagna as he accounted for seven touchdowns in the Bulldogs’ 46-20 win at Curwensville’s Coach Andy Evanko Stadium on homecoming night.

Young Mr. Campagna threw 5 touchdown passes, ran for another, and raced to the house with an interception to pave the way for Claysburg to win their third game of the season.  He chalked up over 300 all-purpose yards for the night, throwing for 243 and rushing for 60 more.

PFN had Claysburg ranked #10 in the state at Class A in their preseason poll, but a couple losses have dropped them.  Last night they played arguably their best game of the year.  Coach Chuck Kassick agreed, “that was our most complete game of the year so far.”

The Bulldogs scored on their first possession, after the C-K defense stopped Curwensville’s gamble on fourth down.  On the second play, Campagna hit Jacob Herline with a pass that ended up going 40 yards for a touchdown.  Nathan Fee’s PAT gave the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead that carried into quarter number two.

That is when Coach Kassick’s team tacked on three more scores to Curwensville’s one touchdown.  Campagna’s second TD came on an interception return of 43 yards for a touchdown.  Then, with 1:20 remaining in the half, Campagna threw a pair of touchdowns.  The first was a 22-yarder to Gavin Treon who ended up with three touchdown receptions.  The second was to Ayden Soler and covered 6 yards.

Sandwiched in between those two touchdowns in the last minute and a half of the second quarter was a brilliant kickoff return for a touchdown by Curwensville’s Reed Hawkins.  But the Golden Tide defense couldn’t come up with a stop and the result was the other Claysburg-Kimmel score with only four seconds remaining in the half to give them a 25-6 cushion.

The Bulldog lead grew quickly to 32-6 as they opened the third quarter with Campagna running 30 yards to the house only 29 seconds in.  A 28-yard pass to Herline began the four play drive.

Later in the third, Lincoln Hoyt exploded through the line and raced 38 yards for the Golden Tide touchdown, but Campagna answered by throwing an 8-yard pass to Treon after Claysburg recovered a fumble deep in Curwensville territory.  That made the score 39-14 as the game entered the last quarter.

The teams exchanged TDs in the fourth to set the final at 46-20.  First of all, Sam Gustafson, ran 6 yards for a score for Curwensville.  Then Campagna pitched the pigskin to Treon for his fifth touchdown pass of the night and Treon’s third TD reception.

“We had some good practice this week,” stated Campagna.  “I play hard and if something like this happens, it happens,” he smiled.  He completed 12 of 19 passes, which was slung around to four different wide outs.  “He’s a complete player and has a good work ethic,” said Coach Kassick.

Claysburg-Kimmel outgained the Golden Tide, 381 total yards to 253.  The run game of Curwensville accounted for 223 of the 253 total yardage.  Gustafson lead all rushers with 86 yards on 19 carries.

One of the keys of the game came early on when the Bulldog defense stopped Curwensville with a goal line stop at the one yard line on Curwensville’s second possession.

Curwensville drops to 1-4 and next week hosts West Branch, while Claysburg-Kimmel will host Southern Huntingdon.  Both bands did a great job at halftime.
