Steubenville – Steubenville jumped out to a 29-0 first-half lead and never looked back, beating McDowell 44-21.
McDowell’s five-game winning streak was abruptly ended Friday night as the Trojans were no match for the Big Reds.
During their five-game run, McDowell had beaten Ohio powers Austintown-Fitch (38-35) and Villa Angela-St. Joseph (38-35). However, Friday’s game resembled losses in weeks two and three, when the Trojans were handled by Mentor (50-14) and Walsh Jesuit (47-21).
“They took it to us,” said McDowell head coach Aaron Slocum. “Credit to them, they out-executed us in the first half, and we couldn’t get any momentum going.”
Despite forcing a punt on the Big Reds’ opening possession, Will Taylor intercepted Blayze Myers on McDowell’s second possession at the Trojan’s 35-yard line – leading quarterback Aiden Davis’s 1-yard run.
McDowell managed only one first down on their five possessions as Steubenville won the field position battle.
Tailbacks Jalen Minniefield and Ca’Juan Bryant scored on touchdown runs of eight and 1-yard, respectively, putting the Big Reds up 21-0 midway through the second quarter.
Minniefield rushed for a game-high 109 on nine carries, while Bryant added 79 yards on 13 carries.
Aiden Davis then completed a 21-yard pass to Jerimiah Hinton before tossing a 31-yard touchdown to Nolan Blackburn as Steubenville (9-0) went ahead 29-0 following Taylor’s 2-point rush.
McDowell got on the scoreboard before halftime when Blayze Myers threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Gavin Magorien with 15 seconds left in the half.

The drive was 6-plays and 80 yards, more yardage than their previous six possessions combined.
“We were playing on our side of the field for much of the first half because we couldn’t move the football,” Slocum said. “They did take it to us, but I didn’t think we really got off the bus.”
The Big Reds came right back and invoked the mercy clock in the opening snap of the third quarter when Minniefield raced 65 yards for a touchdown, coupled with Tre’Von Wiggins’s 2-point reception from Davis.
In Ohio, a 30-point lead in the second half is the mercy rule, unlike 35 in Pennsylvania.
Steubenville led 44-7 after three quarters when Najeh Simon caught a 32-yard touchdown from Santino Haney.
The Trojans got a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns as Myers threw a 25-yard score to James Zigler and backup quarterback Evan Kuhn tossed a 2-yard touchdown to Kameron Bastow.

“If there’s a positive in anything tonight, those two drives would be it,” Slocum concluded. “But honestly, we just didn’t play very well tonight and felt as though we just didn’t get off the bus.”
Blayze Myers completed 12-of-19 passes for 90 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 38 yards. Stephen Porter added 49 yards on the ground and caught two passes for 18 yards. Gavin Magorien caught five passes for 33 yards.
McDowell is back in action as they wrap up the regular season next Friday night, playing host to St. Francis.
