It was the Luke Miller show at Spartan Stadium in Ashland as the North Schuylkill Spartans scored touchdowns on their first six possessions to cruise by the Eagles of Blue Mountain 42-21.
The large crowd on hand witnessed a record setting performance by Miller as he rushed for nearly 400 yards (379 by my count, 383 according to the PA announcer) by running through, around, and past Blue Mountain defenders. Thirty-one times he lugged the rock, scoring 4 touchdowns on runs of 34, 48, 43, and 73 yards. He also had a 75-yard TD negated due to a penalty.

Luke Miller (#1 in dark uniform) follows William Wysoski (#51) looking for a crease. In this case he found it and went 43 yards for the score.
“I really appreciate my offensive line,” Miller stated, “there’s some big dogs in there. I can’t do anything without my teammates. It’s a team game. They make my job so much easier.”
The big dogs Miller was referring to are Gavin Wall, Kaiden Knox, and Aiden Zilker. All of them are either 6’4” or 6’5” and weigh 300 pounds or better. When William Wysoski and Cameron Hutnick are added to complete the starting O-Line, the average size is 6’2” and 285 pounds. That is a big line by anyone’s standards, let alone a 3A school.
North Schuylkill opened the scoring on a Caden Mengel to Landen Smith 23-yard strike. That was followed by Miller’s first of four touchdown jaunts. Blue Mountain came back to make it 14-7 at the end of the first quarter when QB Cohen Kirby threw the first of his three scoring tosses to Duke Renninger.
The Spartans controlled the second stanza by scoring two more times. The first was on Mengel’s short 4-yard run. The second was Miller’s second TD of the night. Both two-point conversions were good and the home team led 30-7 at the half.
Miller scored a touchdown in both the third and fourth quarters to close out the North Schuylkill scoring. “Our offensive line did a super job schematically and Luke’s going to make guys miss and when he gets a crease, he’s really explosive,” stated winning coach Wally Hall.
Kirby threw a touchdown pass in the third and fourth quarter. Both of those scoring passes went to Chase Guers who hauled down 4 balls for 83 yards. Kirby finished the game with 183 yards passing. Eagle running back Carter Smith was held in check in the first half, with only 8 yards on 3 carries. But, in the second half he found some room and made some room himself. As a result he ran for 107 yards on 12 carries, giving him a total of 115 yards for the night.

Cohen Chase (far right in white jersey) uncorks one of his 26 passes on the night. Jesse Strouse (#68), Dylan Foose (#59), and Ryan Clemas (#72) help provide protection.
Next week North Schuylkill, now 5-3, hits the road and travels to Lehighton (3-4), while Blue Mountain, who fell to 4-4, will regroup head head off to play Pottsville (2-5).
One last observation, both bands were very good. It was fun to see and hear their respective performances, including Blue Mountain’s which celebrated Tom Cruise movie music.
