SOUTH CENTRE TOWNSHIP – Week 2 of high school football action brought us to Blue Jay Stadium in Lime Ridge, Pennsylvania, and both teams entering this matchup were in desperate need of a win after disappointing performances from the week prior. One of these teams got that win in decisive fashion, while the other was sent back to the drawing boards to figure out what went wrong. The Mount Carmel Red Tornadoes (1-1) dominated the Central Columbia Blue Jays (0-2) by a final score of 48-0, led by senior running back Michael Kimsal and senior wide receiver Jaylen Delaney, both of whom had two touchdowns on the night.

The Red Tornadoes’ offense started off the game relatively slow. After a great kickoff return by Cooper Karycki that set up the Red Tornadoes at the Blue Jays’ 32 yard line, the first two plays went absolutely nowhere. Luckily for Mount Carmel on third and long, Karycki was able to break away from tackles and make it all the way to the 1 yard line, before taking it into the end zone on the very next play. Central Columbia’s opening drive went nowhere, as the Red Tornadoes forced a three and out, and just a few plays later, the Blue Jays defense forced Mount Carmel to a three and out. After a third straight three and out, Mount Carmel finally started to find their rhythm, as they marched 60 yards in just 8 plays with the drive capped off by a 10 yard touchdown run by Michael Kimsal. A missed extra point followed by a failed two point conversion kept our score at 12-0.

The Blue Jays offense finally started to find their rhythm on the following drive. 7 plays of power football had Central Columbia set up at Mount Carmel’s 36 yard line as the first quarter came to a close. Unfortunately for the Blue Jays, their offense stalled after this, and the drive led to a turnover on downs after three straight passes went nowhere. The very next play, Jaylen Delaney found the end zone for the first time on a 69 yard touchdown run that extended the lead to 18-0. Mount Carmel followed that up with a two point conversion to Cooper Karycki.

Central Columbia’s next drive barely even got off the ground before more disaster struck as on third and long, Josiah Hosler’s pass was intercepted by Karycki and returned 33 yards to the endzone. Thankfully for the Blue Jays, the touchdown was called back as a holding penalty negated the score, however it didn’t take long for Mount Carmel to take advantage of the short field. Just three plays later, Jaylen Delaney found the endzone for a second time on a 24 yard carry. Another two point conversion to Cooper Karycki increased Mount Carmel’s lead to 28-0 with just over 5 minutes left in the first half.

Another quick three and out led to one more Mount Carmel offensive drive, and once again it seemed like they were well on their way to scoring another touchdown. However once Mount Carmel got inside the 10 yard line, the Blue Jays’ defense held strong including a third down sack by Dominic Keller and Owen Zanoline that forced the Red Tornadoes to kick a field goal on fourth down which sailed wide right, keeping our score 28-0 heading into halftime.

Mount Carmel’s offense didn’t take their foot off the gas to start the second half. After a fumble on the kickoff return by the Blue Jays, the Red Tornadoes found the end zone just a play later on a 19 yard touchdown run by Michael Kimsal, his second of the night, which increased the lead to 34-0. After the play Mount Carmel was called for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty which was enforced on the kickoff. This allowed Central Columbia to have a good return, as well as an extra 15 yards added on after the return because of another Mount Carmel penalty. The Blue Jays drove all the way down to the Mount Carmel 6 yard line where once again, the offense stalled, as the drive ended on an incomplete pass on fourth down that went through the hands of reciever Cole Horrax. Just like last drive, Mount Carmel wasted no time adding to their lead, as just two plays later, Michael Higgins took the handoff from Gavin Marshalek 91 yards to the end zone, increasing their lead to 41-0 and activating the mercy rule.

The fourth quarter featured Mount Carmel’s backups and more of the same from Central Columbia. The game saw one final touchdown on a connection from backup quarterback James Spears to Chance Swatski for a 19 yard score. As the remaining minutes ticked away, Mount Carmel moved on to a 1-1 record on the year while Central Columbia fell to an 0-2 record on the year.

Next week Mount Carmel will be back at home to face Mifflinburg, while Central Columbia will be on the road facing Executive Education Academy.
