Nazareth only needed the first half to put the game into mercy rule Saturday night.

BETHLEHEM- The Nazareth Blue Eagles scored on five of their six first half possessions Saturday night at Bethlehem Area School District Stadium en route to a convincing 36-7 win over Bethlehem Catholic before a modest crowd in a key Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Northampton division match-up.

The Blue Eagles started the scoring barrage on their second drive, after going three-and-out on the opening drive. Running back Marquez Wimberly cashed in from a yard out with 1:51 left in the first quarter.

The defense then held the Golden Hawks to zero first downs on the ensuing drive and Nazareth’s offense got rolling again as quarterback Peyton Falzone went four-for four passing and Wimberly converted an end-around run for a 19 yard touchdown for his second score and a 14-0 lead that capped off a 55 yard drive with 10:48 left in the half.

“We had so many contributions from so many guys tonight. Guys who have had not had so many plays earlier in the season stepped up to make plays…It was complete team effort.” Head coach Tom Falzone said after the win.

Bethlehem Catholic could not get anything done on offense as swarming Nazareth defense kept bot quarterbacks of the Golden Hawks at bay neither Cayden Vassa, a junior and sophomore Axel Burkhart were a combined one-twelve passing for just 15 yards after three quarters. As a team Becahi had less than a hundred yards in total offense.

The next time Nazareth had the ball at their own 23 yard line they went 73 yards that was capped off with a Falzone to Wimberly 16 yard touchdown pass as Falzone rolled left threw back to back right corner of the end zone for a 21-0 lead after place-kicker Owen Hall converted his third PAT with 3:37 left in the quarter. On the drive connected with Caleb Newsome for a 31 yard pass play.

It didn’t take long for Falzone, a Virginia Tech commit, to get back on the field as the Blue Eagle defense did their job holding the Golden Hawks to another three-and-out and to add insult to injury a 13 yard punt gave the visitors excellent field position at the Becahi 36 yard line. Two plays later Falzone dropped in a pass to Newsome, a Lafayette commit for a thigh-high fingertip catch and a 29-0 lead as the Blue Eagles converterd a two-point conversion off a fake PAT with 1;55 till the break.

Not content to sit on a 29 point lead, Nazareth got the ball back with a half-minute to go before intermission, Falzone lofted a 51 yard pass to Luke Depietro, the freshman made a tremendous catch, to put the potent offense inside the five yard line. On the final play of the half Falzone completed a three yard pass to Depietro for a 36-0 lead as teams headed for the locker room.

Falzone ended his night by throwing for just over 200 yards on 13 of 19 passing and three scores while Wimberly picked up 141 yards and found the end zone twice. Newsome led the receiving corps with 76 yards and the one touchdown.

Bethlehem Catholic avoided the shutout late in the fourth quarter, with all the Nazareth starters on the sidelines Carter Vassa scored from long distance to complete the scoring in the game.

Nazareth (6-2) will be back at Andrew Leh Stadium on Friday to face Northampton (4-4) the Konkrete Kids dropped a 42-21 decision to unbeaten Bethlehem Freedom this weekend. Bethlehem Catholic (4-4) tries to end a two game losing streak as they face Christmas City rivals Bethlehem Liberty Saturday night.
