Bradford – New York won their first Big 30 All-Star Football Game since 2015 with a convincing 39-18 victory over Pennsylvania.

Following a streak of six losses, one tie, and a game lost due to COVID-19, New York controlled play from the outset and scored their first victory in the Big 30 game since a 44-8 rout of the Keystone State in 2015.

“It means everything to do this tonight,” said New York tailback Kaedon Holcomb. My family has played in this game, and it means a lot. It’s been a tough two weeks of practice, and we came out and took it to them. These boys are great; it means the world to them, and it means the world to me.”

Holcomb and his teammates soon got things rolling and scored on three consecutive drives in the second quarter to take a commanding 21-3 lead.

Succeeding a 15-play 67-yard drive, the Empire State took the lead when Michael Frederick of Allegany-Limestone High School tossed a 12-yard touchdown to Carmine Hoag of Salamanca.

A little over a minute later, New York made it 14-0 as Dalton Giboo of Pioneer scored on a 28-yard touchdown run following an interception by Joshua Auman.

“That second quarter had a lot to do with what we weren’t doing on defense as well as offense,” said Pennsylvania head coach Ryan Neyman- who is also the head coach at Cameron County. They were ripping off some big plays, but we also threw an interception that set up one of those scores, so we didn’t do ourselves any favors.”

Pennsylvania got on the scoreboard on their ensuing drive when Jake Franz of Bradford booted a 22-yard field goal.

The momentum quickly swung back in the Empire State’s direction when Holcomb scored on a 14-yard run, capping a 14-play 70-yard drive.

“I knew I was close to the goal line, so I put my head down and ran hard,” said Holcomb. “I then looked down and saw the red and knew I was in and everybody was cheering. It feels great knowing that I contributed and wasn’t just running the ball a little bit.”

Kaedon Holcomb finished the night with a game-high 111 yards on 24 carries. New York outrushed Pennsylvania 269-119 and held a 57-26 advantage in touches.

“That wasn’t me (rushing for those yards); that was my offensive line,” Holcomb said. “I was a little nervous saying something to them in practice, but all credit goes to those guys. Without them, this game would be nothing,”

Later in the first half, Keystone State went on its best drive of the night, marching 65 yards in nine plays and scored on a 5-yard run by Matt Davis of St. Marys.

Special teams helped New York win the game in the second half with a pair of blocked punts in the third quarter.

“If you take away those miscues with the blocked punts and interceptions, this could’ve been a one-score game,” said Neyman. When you give an all-star team the ball inside your 20-yard line, they’re going to execute.”

The short fields led to Gabe Kempf’s 40-yard field goal and Frederick’s 1-yard touchdown run, extending the lead to 31-10 with 5:00 to play in the third quarter.

Pennsylvania responded with a touchdown when Eisenhower’s Shawn Pascuzzi threw an 18-yard pass to fellow Knights teammate Camron Jakuczak to pull within 31-18 late in the third quarter following a 62-yard drive.

Bradford’s Matt Perry had a 39-yard gain on the series and the subsequent 2-point reception. Perry led Pennsylvania with 53 yards on three carries,

In the fourth quarter, New York put the game away when Dalton Giboo scored his second touchdown of the night on a 1-yard run with 4:50 to play following a turnover on downs.

Michael Frederick ran in the 2-points to put the finishing touches on the contest. Giboo rushed for 75 yards on ten carries, while Frederick completed 9-of-16 passes for 115 yards and a touchdown while adding 48 on the ground.

“It’s a great honor to coach in a game like this,” concluded Neyman. “Obviously, we would have loved to have been on the winning side tonight. We had 42 kids, and only three of them were ours, but now they’re all part of our Cameron County family.”
