North Allegheny vs Norwin Tigers

The North Allegheny Tigers had a lot of questions to answer coming into their WPIAL 6A Semifinal clash with the Norwin Knights. After dropping their last two games of the season including a 67-0 loss to 5A Pine-Richland, would the Tigers be on upset alert against a Norwin team looking for a program-defining win?

In a game that saw over 775 yards of combined offense, North Allegheny (8-3) was able to pull away from Norwin (7-4) 35-17 to once again advance to the WPIAL 6A Championship. Though the Tigers dominated portions of this game, it didn’t have that feel in the first half.

North Allegheny only crossed the 50 once in the entire first half, and that came on a 56 yard touchdown pass on third down as Junior QB Brady Brinkley found Senior WR Cameron Kushner on a post pattern.Kushner finished with 3 catches, 120 yards and 2 touchdowns. At the break, the Tigers only led 7-3, but in the 2nd half, Senior RB Luke Rohan and the offensive line took over.

Rohan, who only had 31 yards in the first, took his first carry of the 2nd half into the endzone for a 31 yard touchdown. That was one of three touchdowns the Senior Running Back scored on the night, as Rohan finished the game with 180 yards on 22 carries. The offensive line led by Senior Lincoln Hoke, a Pitt commit, helped the Tigers rack up over 200 yards on the ground in the 2nd half. Hoke dominated on both sides of the ball, finishing the game with 3 ½ sacks and 11 total tackles on defense.

A critical moment in this game came when a 73 yard touchdown pass from Norwin Senior QB Tristyn Tavares to Jake Knight was called back due to a holding call. The touchdown would’ve tightened the game to 21-10 in the middle of the third quarter, but the score remained 21-3. Tavares would end up finding Knight on an 80 yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to 21-10 with 7:17 left in the 4th quarter after Senior Kicker Ethan Maravich missed a field goal for North Allegheny.

Tavares finished the game 14/23 for 213 yards, 2 total touchdowns and 1 interception. Knight caught 4 passes for 115 yards.

The Tigers were able to ice the game with Rohan’s final two touchdowns, which went for 57 and 11 yards. North Allegheny will have a rematch with Central Catholic in the WPIAL 6A Championship next Saturday at Pine-Richland. This will be the 4th consecutive meeting in championship between the Tigers and Vikings. North Allegheny won in 2022 and 2023 while Central Catholic won last year.

Kickoff is set for 6pm.
