North East – Three touchdowns, less than two minutes apart in the third quarter, led North East to a dominant 46-3 victory over Girard.

Last season, the Grape Pickers led at halftime against Girard; that contest ended with the Yellowjackets coming back and getting the win 34-27.

On Saturday afternoon, North East built a 20-3 halftime lead, and this time they finished the job resoundingly with three touchdowns less than two minutes apart, putting the mercy clock into effect.

“It’s exciting, I really wanted this game today,” said North East head coach Chris Grychowski. ‘I challenged the kids earlier in the week. I told them we had to beat Girard. They’re a good football team with a great record. We had to get a win to set us up heading toward the playoffs.”

The game marked a nice bounce back for the Pickers, who fell last Thursday night to Corry 34-16.

Taking the football to open the second half, the Grape Pickers drove 59 yards in seven plays, scoring on Ethen Ringer’s 23-yard run to open up a 27-3 lead.

Three plays later, Saejon Lyons intercepted a Ryan St. Julien pass and returned it 18 yards for a touchdown.

A Kyler See interception on the following drive led to Bryson Galloway tossing his third touchdown of the afternoon and second to Logan Latimore from 45 yards out, putting North East ahead 39-3 at the 6:45 mark of the third quarter.

“Our game plan was to come in and do what we do,” said Galloway. “We thought we could throw all over them and run the ball. I feel like we have one of the best groups in the region, and we can compete with that. Our coaches told us all week that we should come here and get the anger out after the Corry game, when we were in it at halftime.”

North East intercepted four passes on the day.

“I’m really proud of those guys in the secondary,” said Grychowski. “We had a rough game last week against Corry. We really worked our pass defense this week. It was great to see the guys respond that well.”

The Pickers had taken a 7-0 lead after stopping Girard short of the sticks on the initial drive of the contest at their 13-yard line, driving 87 yards with Galloway connecting with Carter Crozier on a 19-yard touchdown pass.

“That was a confidence boost,” Grychowski said. “The kids responded well, my offense was hungry. We wanted to come out and run the ball, so it was nice to see them move the ball down the field.”

Aidan Arnold ran 30 yards on the opening snap for Girard, but was held to 48 yards on 12 carries. He also caught seven passes for 68 yards to lead the Yellowjackets.

“I don’t know if it was the scheme we put in this week or what, but the guys just started to figure things out,” said Grychowski. “They made up their minds that they were going to come out and play today.”

Crozier, who caught five passes for 52 yards, scored on a 27-yard touchdown run off an option pitch in the second quarter, giving North East a 14-0 lead.

Girard was able to score on Tyler Vavreck’s 27-yard field goal that capped a 12-play 52-yard drive, but that was all the closer the Yellowjackets would get.

Taking over with 3:06 remaining in the first half, Bryson Galloway led a 7-play 75-yard touchdown drive, capping the first half in style with a 49-yard touchdown pass to Latimore with 1:05 left on the clock.

“Logan made the sacrifice at the beginning of the season because we didn’t have a right tackle,” Grychowski said. “He was willing to step in and play tackle for us. You need a strong right tackle. As the season progressed, we picked up a new senior who was able to move back to tight end.

Galloway completed 8-of-12 passes for 159 yards and three touchdowns while adding 65 yards rushing on eight attempts.

“It wasn’t anything spectacular, I could have played better and thrown a few better balls,” said Galloway. “But we delivered and got done what we needed to get done.”

North East closed the scoring with a 2-yard run by Austin Castile with 65 seconds to play.

For the Grape Pickers, the turnaround has been impressive, as the Pickers have turned a 2-8 campaign last season into a 6-2 start to 2025.

“Last season, we had a fresh coaching staff coming in and didn’t really know anybody,” said Galloway. “This year we came in, we know everybody, and we’re comfortable with our plays. Our offensive and defensive coordinators consistently call good plays and provide effective schemes week in and week out. That’s helping us bounce back and get a lot of confidence in ourselves.”

They’ll look to keep their momentum going when they host Fairview next Friday night.

“Last year it was a new coach and a new system,” concluded Grychowski. “It was a new style with a young group of kids, most of them sophomores. Now with another year under their belt, they know what we expect from them, and they’re meeting those expectations. They’re responding very well.”

Girard will look to bounce back when it plays host to Fort LeBoeuf next Friday night.
