If I told you that North Penn did not get a touchdown on the ground from Matt Pownall or Rylei Gray, you may be thinking that North Penn fell to Central Bucks West Friday night. That was far from the case, as the Knights had many tricks up their sleeve. The biggest was a direct snap to Rylei Gray, who threw a second quarter touchdown pass to Matt Bucksar. The defense stifled nearly every threat from the Bucks in a 31-13 victory on Senior Night at Crawford Stadium.
Nate Schepian picked off Bucks QB Josh George on his first pass of the game, setting up the Knights in prime position. Two plays later, Bucksar connected with Pownall from ten yards out for the first score of the game.
The teams then exchanged punt attempts. Jeff Cappa blocked the North Penn punt and Gavin Todd recovered, allowing the Bucks to take over at the North Penn 22.
George then made his first of three completions on the evening, throwing an 8-yard pass to Louie Cipollo to get the Bucks down to the one yard line. George took it in from there and made the score 7-6 with :47 to play in the first quarter.
The Bucks would not get a first down for the rest of the first half. Two possessions later for North Penn, Bucksar made a field-flipping connection to Pownall for 35 yards. Nearing the end zone, the Knights used the trick play direct snap to Rylei Gray, as he cut to his right to get the ball. He hooked up with Bucksar over the left side and North Penn took a 14-6 lead with 3:06 to play in the opening half.
The Knights drove the field again prior to halftime, and CB West dodged a bullet when Bucksar threw incomplete into the middle of the end zone. However, a 28-yard field goal was good as the halftime horn sounded and North Penn led by two scores at 17-6.
Two plays into the second half, George was picked off for the second time. This time, Jack Staugaitis got in front of the receiver and took the ball away. The Knights controlled the rock for the next five minutes of the third quarter, culminating with an Aiden Ashley 1-yard plunge. Bucksar and Sal Collela’s 21-yard catch helped setup the score.
Nick Miletto’s 18-yard touchdown run up the gut cut the lead to 24-13, but it was too little too late. Bucksar responded with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Garrett to push the lead back to 31-13 with 6:03 to play. The Bucks’ last gasp came with a 4th & 17 incompletion and North Penn was able to kneel out the clock for the victory.
On the night, Rylei Gray rushed for 121 yards and Matt Pownall ran for 125. Despite neither of them scoring on the ground, their one-two punch in the second half killed the clock and kept the Bucks defense on the field, wearing them down. Bucksar went 9/14 for 98 yards and two scores. CB West turned the ball over twice in the first half, ultimately dooming their cause. West was held to 112 yards on the ground and 34 through the air.
North Penn wraps up the regular season next Friday night when they host Abington. The Bucks will go to Central Bucks East.
