ASHLAND- Sometimes it’s the little things that can determine the outcome of a highly-anticipated high school football game. On Friday night, this came to fruition as Jim Thorpe turned the ball over four times to an opportunistic North Schuylkill squad Friday night at Ghosh Orthodontics Field at Spartan Stadium giving the Spartans a 41-20 decision in a Schuylkill League showdown.

Jim Thorpe (5-1) came into the contest having a 17 quarter consecutive scoreless streak and had only surrendered seven points in previous five games. That streak ended on the Olympians’ second possession. They started the drive on their own 18. After a five yard penalty, then out of the wildcat formation, the snap was sent high into the end zone, a scramble for the ball led to a safety and a 2-0 lead.

North Schuylkill (5-1) made the score 8-0 on a 42 yard run by Zach Chowansky as thge PAT sailed wide.

The Olympians using a couple trick plays moved deep into Spartan territory, but a fumble gave the Spartans the ball at their own 15. On the first play of the drive, Chowansky ripped off an 85 touchdown run extending the lead to 14-0 as the two-point conversion was no good with 1:23 left in the opening quarter.

Quarterback Davier Calcano connected with Noah Snisky for Jim Thorpe on a 28 yard scoring pass to make the score 14-7 on the last play of the quarter.

A Spartan fumble on the first play of the second quarter allowed the Olympians to set up shop at the North Schuylkill 40. On the first play from scrimmage Calcano found Snisky again for a touchdown, however the 2 point conversion failed leaving the score at 14-13.

Jaden Lieby, the Spartans quarterback had a nifty 18 yard score, after faking an inside handoff and running to the outside and dove into the end zone to give his team a 20-13 lead at intermission

North Schuylkill coach Wally Hall stated, “I liked how our defense played tonight. We started out strong and kept the intensity up all night against a very good football team.”

Leiby scored on his teams opening possession of the second half by out-racing the Olympian defenders on a 66 yard jaunt to make the score 28-13.

The Spartans extended the lead to 35-13 on an eight yard run by Chowansky, who finished the night with 277 yards rushing and 4 scores.

“There was room everywhere to run. The line opened up some incredible holes, especially to the outside was there anytime we wanted it. They did a fantastic job.” Chowansky said afterward.

Jim Thorpe running back C.J Selby found the end zone from 2 yards out to make it 35-20, but again Chowansky scored the last points with just under a minute left from 9 yards out.

Looking ahead to next week, Jim Thorpe will be at home against Blue Mountain (4-2) a 36-0 winner over Lehighton. North Schuylkill will be at home facing Tamaqua (5-1) who was knocked off by Pottsville 34-17 Friday night
