Johnstown – The North captured the 53rd First Summit Ken Lantzy All-Star Classic with a late touchdown.

With the game tied and overtime looming, the North took possession near mid-field with under six minutes to play. The Northern Bedford County duo of quarterback Eion Snyder and tailback Adam Johnson led the North to victory.

Johnson, who scored three rushing touchdowns, scored what proved to be the game-winner on a 3-yard run with 1:35 seconds to play. “This was awesome,” said Johnson. “From the moment I was picked, I knew I was a part of something special, and now I am a Ken Lantzy alum. Hopefully, I can pass it down through generations because that’s how people recognize you.”

A 1-hour weather delay halted the game as halftime arrived due to lightning. The fans that stayed and didn’t mind the late night witnessed an excellent finish at Greater Johnstown’s Trojan Stadium

Adam Johnson rushed for 30 yards on eight carries while grabbing two passes for 39 yards to earn MVP honors.
Fellow Black Panthers teammate and signal caller Eion Synder completed 7-of-15 passes for 118 yards while rushing for a team-high 107 yards.

On that final drive, Snyder connected with McCort-Carroll’s Shakile Ferguson on a 41-yard pass that set up Johnson’s winning score. “I have to give all the credit to my lineman and teammates, Johnson said. “I’d nothing without them. Everyone on our team put in the work all week.”

The South took the football, and the lead on a 27-yard field goal by Gannon recruit Bryson Costa following an 8-play 60-yard drive. The North responded with Chestnut Ridge quarterback Chase Whysong leading a 10-play 91-yard drive as he passed for 41 yards on the possession, leading to Johnson’s first score on the evening, giving the North a 7-3 advantage midway through the second stanza.

The South then took the lead heading into the locker room, and the delay with an 85-yard drive capped with United-Valley’s Caden McCully scoring on a 1-yard run. The South led 10-7 at intermission.

Coming out from the halftime delay, the North had two drives abruptly end on interceptions by United Valley’s Issac Worthington and Gino DiPaolo. Worthington picked off two passes in the game. Special teams saw the first score of the second half when Meyersdale’s Brady McKenzie blocked a punt for a safety.

The ensuing drive led to Johnson’s second score from a yard out as the North went ahead 17-10. The South would draw even when the Conemaugh Township teammates of John  Updyke and Kyler Mauzy connected for a 20-yard reverse pass touchdown to tie the game 17 that set the stage for the fantastic finish.
