Heritage Conference Game of the Week
Northern Cambria Colts (1-0) at United Valley Lions (1-0)
Last meeting 8/25/23 United 20-14
The last time these two teams meet was the opener last year in which United Valley won by six points. At the time Ty Dumm was a Northern Cambria wide receiver. He had both of the Colts touchdowns and nine total touches. It was the only regular season loss for the Colts. As both teams went 9-1 and the Lions won the Conference based on their head to head record. Last month I openly stated on my page that Ty Dumm was the best player in the conference. Tonight he was the best player on the field as the Colts pulled away with a strong second half to win 27-0. Dumm moved to quarterback last year after the starter Ethan Donitalli was injured and put up big numbers. (600 passing yards, 900 rushing yards, 300 receiving and five interceptions) I was at last years Coal Bowl where he ran 75 yards on the games first play and had three picks. Tonight two rushing touchdowns, a passing touchdown and a return touchdown that was called back.
Both teams had the ball twice in the first quarter. In the first ten and a half minutes United Valley dominated with it’s much bigger line. The Colts quicker team was able to limit any damage and pressure Lions quarterback Dmitri Worthington. The Colts only possession was a three and out. On the Lions second possession they took advantage of good field position to get into field goal range. The kick was blocked and Dumm picked it up and was off to the races for a touchdown. A Colt player who appeared to get caught up in the moment blocked a Lion in the back at midfield, Dumm was at the Lions ten when the block was thrown. Plays like this usually come back to bite you in the big game but the Colts showed their grit. The Colts would drive 68 yards and score on a fourth and 3 from the 17. Hats off to the play caller, it was a great play call. Reese Wagner went straight up the middle for the games first score. On the Lions next possession Worthington was intercepted by Daniel Farrell. But the Colts went backwards thanks to three straight penalties. The Lions would then go on their best drive of the night, starting at their own 22. They used over six minutes and drove into the Colts red zone. But once again Worthington was intercepted. This time he threw late and Nate Fry picked him off in the end zone. The Colts went into the lockers up 7-0.
Colts Coach Sam Shutty must have pushed the right buttons at half as the Colts came out and dominated the second half and make a big statement to the rest of the conference. They went right down the field on the opening possession and Ty Dumm raced right up the middle 24 yards dragging Lions with him for their second touchdown. The kickoff that followed wasn’t fielded until it stopped rolling inside the five and the return man fell down. The Lions couldn’t move the ball at all and almost gave up a safety. The punt was returned to the two yard line. Dumm scored on the next play. The Lions next drive saw them stuffed on a fourth and one from the Colts 43. The Colts moved right down the field and scored on another fourth down play as Dumm hit Caleb Dolney on the run in the back of the end zone on the first play of the fourth quarter. The rest of the fourth quarter was a battle in the trenches and the Colts were able to get some younger players into the game late. The Lions will have to bounce back, while the Colts get a big win that could set up an interesting Coal Bowl.
