WILSON BORO- Sometimes, what seems on paper, should to be a great contest between evenly matched teams doesn’t always pan out on the the field of play. Case in point of Saturday’s afternoon game as undefeated Northwestern Lehigh Tigers ripped apart a Wilson Warrior squad, who also came into the game with an unblemished record by a score of 42-6 in a game that was in mercy-rule by halftime.

The Tigers defense wore out Wilson’s highly-touted quarterback Cayden Stem all game by limiting him to only six completions for 29 yards on eighteen attempts and his two top targets Damon Simpson and Zach Gillen to zero receptions.

“We used a five-man in the box technique up front and played coverage across the board and we got pressure against their front to keep him(Stem) uncomfortable negate all that speed Wilson had.” Coach Josh Snyder said after the game of his Tiger defense.

Northwestern signal-caller Justin Holmes on the other hand gashed and dashed his way against an over-matched Wilson defense to five score in the first half, including 28 points alone in the second quarter to put the game out of reach and an opportunity for a running clock after intermission.

Stem had his chances to make some big plays in the passing game early in the game, but his passes seems to just miss his targets as the Tiger defense forced him to throw off rhythm, A Tyler Wickert interception of a Stem pass in the end zone with about five minutes go in the opening quarter started the ball rolling. On the ensuing Tiger drive that went 80 yards and culminating with a five yard run by Dalton Clymer with 1:03 left and a 7-0 lead.

Holmes, who picked up 204 yards rushing, dashed in from 38 yards out with 9:08 left in the second quarter, using a punishing stiff arm in the second level to make it 15-0 as he also scored on the two-point conversion.

On their next possession, Holmes again used his legs to break through the center of the Wilson line and sprinted to a 69 yard score and a 21-0 lead with 4:08 on the clock. Afetr Wilson failed to convert on fourth down giving the ball back to the potent Tiger offense.

After a Wikert nifty punt return for Northwestern set them up inside the 20, Clymer scored his second touchdown on another five yard run to make it a 28-0 with still 2:38 remaining.

Wilson again was stopped on fourth down and the Tigers were not finished putting up points as Holmes scored again from 17 yards with just 13 seconds left before the hlaf and putting the game into mercy-rule.

Wilson was able to avoid to avoid the shutout after forcing a Northwestern punt on their opening drive of the second half. The Warriors started the drive their 45. Stem sneaked in for a 1 yd score with 1:50 left 3rd quarter.

Northwestern then on the ensuing drive went 63 yards and capped off the drive with a juggling catch by Cade Christopher of a Justin Holmes toss from 18 yards to close out the scoring with 11:08 left in the game.

Northwestern(6-0) will be back at the Tigers Den next week to host (3-3) Blue Mountain a 35-22 winner over Lehighton, while it doesn’t get easier for Wilson(5-1) will be on the road to face the Crimson Tide of Pottsville(5-1) who defeated Southern Lehigh 42-26.
