Tigers Improve to 8-0 After Key Win in Schuylkill/Colonial League Contest.

NEW TRIPOLI- Northwestern’s quarterback Justin Holmes was not to be denied with his team facing a fourth and one with just under a minute left in the game, and the ball sitting a the Pottsville 12 yard line, Holmes picked up three yards and clinched the victory 22-14 to remain unbeaten in the Schuylkill/Colonial League Gold division showdown Friday night.

Tiger place-kicker Luke Benvin connected on a 22 yard field goal with 7:16 left in the third quarter to make it a 22-7 lead after a 41 yard gain by Holmes set the home team up with an ideal field position in the red zone, but the Crimson Tide defense stiffened to just give up three points.

Pottsville did open the scoring as the Tide recovered a Tiger fumble at the home teams’ 40 yard line. Five plays later Jacze Carabello-Snowell scored from a yard out and a 7-0 with 4:50 left in the first quarter.

Northwestern took advantage of great field position near the 50 yard line on their next drive and Holmes capped it off with a two yard score with 1:47 still left in the opening quarter to even the game 7-7.

Pottsville could not convert a fourth down conversion at the Northwestern 22 early in the second quarter. A 78 yard drive ensued for the Tigers as RB Cade Christopher found paydirt frm 2 yards out giving the home team a 13-7 lead as the two-point conversion attempt failed at the 8:03 mark.

A key moment of the game came with Pottsville on their own 34 decided to convert a 4th and 1, but the interior of the Tiger line snuffed out the run, giving the offense a short field and they took advantage as Holmes bulled his way to a four yard score with 3:01 left before halftime making the score 19-7.

Offensively, Holmes picked up 162 yards rushing on 28 carries and a couple of touchdowns, but he also came up with some big plays on the defensive end. First he picked off a Carballo-Snowell pass at the goal line on the final play of the half on a fourth-and twenty-three to maintain the twelve point lead.

Following Benvin’s field goal, the Crimson Tide were not going down without a fight a nine yard score by running back Travontai Davis with exactly four minutes left in the the third quarter made the score 22-14 but that would be all the scoring either team would get the rest of the night.

With 3:56 left in the game, Pottsville was approaching midfield, in an attempt to possibly tie the game, Holmes strip-sacked Carabello-Snowell and Dalton Clymer pounced on the ball at the Tide 34 leading the Tigers to run out the clock.

“I missed some tackles early in the game, I just tried to go straight at him(Carabello-Snowell) and just went for the legs and not trying to arm tackle him and the ball popped out.” Holmes said of his play that sealed the game.

Northwestern take their perfect record on the road next Friday to meet (4-4) Saucon Valley a 20-14 winner over Lehighton. Pottsville (6-2) will be at Bangor next week, the Slaters are 4-3 and will be at Wilson Saturday afternoon.
