Antelopes end Tigers’ 31-game winning streak Saturday afternoon and avenge last year’s loss.

MECHANICSBURG- For three consecutive years, the Northwestern Lehigh Tigers reached the PIAA State 3A championship games. The Tigers’ last loss of any kind came against Belle Vernon 38-7 in the 2023 3A final. Since that game, the Tigers ripped off 31 straight wins, including a thrilling 36-33 win over Avonworth last season in overtime with an Eli Zimmerman ten-yard scoring run. However, this Saturday afternoon, the Antelopes exacted some revenge on the Tigers with a convincing 31-7 win at Chapman Field at Cumberland Valley High School.

The Avonworth speed and athleticism came to the forefront, scoring on their first four possessions, including a 53-yard touchdown pass from Carson Bellinger to Jaden Jones on their first drive. Northwestern’s only score of the game came on a Braxton Lakatosh touchdown run from 2 yards out to tie the score at 7 with 5:11 in the first quarter on an 11-play 87-yard drive that took over five minutes.

Northwestern Lehigh had an incredible run for the graduating seniors, going 57-5 and winning one state championship in three years—a District XI record.

“What we did here at Northwestern Lehigh was one of the best experiences,” Shane Leh, quarterback, stated afterwards. : No one ever did for the football program. I am grateful to be doing it with this group of teammates.” He concluded.

Luca Neal of Avonworth gained 123 yards and three touchdowns and caught a couple of passes in the contest. Jones led the receiving corps with 187 yards receiving on seven receptions.

“They brought more pressure than they showed all season. It was tough for us to get comfortable in the pocket. We had some guys open, but we didn’t have the time to throw. Coach Josh Snyder of Northwestern Lehigh stated after the game.

Quarterback Shane Leh completed 12 of 28 passes for 139 yards and one interception. Shane Hulmes was the leading receiver with seven catches for 44 yards. Mason Bollinger was second with three completions for 43 yards. Lakatosh led the run game with 12 carries and 46 yards, and one touchdown.

Northwest Lehigh’s defense forced five turnovers in the game, but the Antelopes shut down any thoughts of a Tiger comeback.
