Defending Champs Belle Vernon Ruin Northwestern Lehigh’s Undefeated Season.

MECHANICSBURG-  Northwestern Lehigh Tigers ran into a buzz-saw Saturday afternoon at Chapman Field at Cumberland Valley High School in the PIAA State 3A Championship in the form of the Belle Vernon Leopards.  The Tigers could only muster 249 yards of total offense and were held to 34 points under their season average in a 38-7 decision to the defending state champion before a large crowd on a cloudy afternoon.

Belle Vernon scored the 21 points of the contest on a opening kickoff return, that covered 71 yards and then a 62 yards busted run for a score and then a two yard quarterback sneak.  On te ensuing kickoff Devon Hildebrand returned the ball to the Northwestern 32 yard line. Mason Bollinger was on the receiving end of a 17 yard pass from Shane Leh. Hildebrand then hauled in a 32 yard gain to the Belle Vernon 18. After a Dalton Clymer one yard gain. Two plays later with just 35 seconds before halftime, Leh hit WR Landen Matson with a 17 yard touchdown pass to cut the led to 21-7 at intermission.

Northwestern received the second half kickoff and drove into Leopards territory, but were forced to punt and pinned Belle Vernon at their own eight, but Quinton Martin ripped off a 92 yard score to make it 28-7. A 44 yard field goal and a late touchdown by Belle Vernon pushed the lead to 38-7.

The Tigers were held to just 119 yards passing and 130 yards rushing. QB Shane Leh was 14 of 21 passing and just one score. RB Dalton Clymer picked up 102 yards on 23 carries in the contest.

Northwestern was looking for District XI’s first title since 2010 when Allentown Central Catholic defeated Bishop McDevitt 28-27. Parkland was the last team from the District to make an appearance in the title game in 2015 a 21-18 loss to Pittsburgh Central Catholic.

After the game, Northwestern coach Josh Snyder stated, “These guys took us to new levels never before seen at Northwestern. We hope to build off this experience and continue to grow in the future. We are going back to our stadium in New Tripoli and enjoy this day.”
