Union City – Northwestern snapped a 3-game skid with a 28-6 victory over Union City Saturday night at Bears Stadium.
The Wildcats played arguably their most complete game of the season, gaining 324 yards and limiting the Bears to 66, including eight on the ground.
This Saturday’s result was almost 360 from last week’s 42-8 loss to Seneca.
“We were disappointed with our performance last Saturday,” said Northwestern head coach Bill Henwood. “We focused on fixing our mistakes and playing the way we know we can. We had a nice game plan on offense and defense. We thought we had what it took to win, and fortunately, we did.”
With Union City’s rushing attack critical, Northwestern knew they needed the strike early to put them behind the eight ball.
The Wildcats did so on their second snap of the game when Brodie Mikovch caught a 45-yard touchdown pass from Braden Swift.
“We knew we needed to get up on them because they can drain the clock,” said Henwood. “They play that smashmouth football and have some athletes, so shout-out to them for their efforts.”
Succeeding a fumble recovery at the Bears’ 23-yard line, Swift tossed a 6-yard touchdown to Dalton Hough.

Swift finished the night 6-for-14 passing for 119 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception. Steven Klakamp made the interception in the end zone for a touchback that could have increased the lead by halftime.
“We talked in the locker room because we were a little down, feeling like we should have been up more,” Henwood said. ” So it was important to regain the confidence and come out the way we did in the second half.”
Nevertheless, Northwestern took a 16-0 lead into the locker room, and Swift’s 47-yard pass to Zac Johnson to begin the second half was just what the doctor ordered.
David White then capped the 67-yard drive with a 5-yard run.
Recovering another fumble at the 9-yard line, White scored his second touchdown on a 2-yard run late in the third quarter.
“We were working hard all week and trying to figure things out as we go down the stretch,” said White. “We’ve wanted to finish the season on a winning streak.”
White rushed for 57 yards and scored two touchdowns, while Brody Bickenhouser led the Wildcats with 89 yards on 11 carries.
“That was huge for me because I only had two touchdowns last year,” White said. “Now I got four, so I’m just focusing on improving, but I have to give credit to my lineman, I love them.”
Union City got on the scoreboard in the closing seconds when Steven Klakamp caught a 10-yard touchdown from Austin Brown on a halfback-option pass.

The drive was 15 plays covering 66 yards. Before that, the Bears had negative 14 yards in the half. They gained only 27 in the first half.
Union City finishes their season at 0-9.
