It was a hard fought battle at The Kingdom on Friday night between two top 6A teams that ended with Norwin pulling away in the fourth quarter to defeat Hempfield Area, 33-26. The Knights were partial to the running game, leaning on Giovanni Rothrauff’s 178 yards on the ground and two touchdowns, including a 67 yard scamper in the first quarter for the then, 14-6 lead. the scoring would stop for Norwin until the third quarter when they amounted a safety after a great punt pinned Hempfield down inside the 5 yard line. Until that time it was all Hempfield, led by Dominic Detruf’s record breaking performance, setting a school record in four separate categories. He now has 321 completions, 562 attempts, 4,330 yards, and 42 touchdowns on his career. three of those touchdowns came tonight as he led Hempfield to putting up 20 unanswered points on Norwin before the safety in the third quarter. After that safety it was all Norwin in the fourth, scoring 17 in the fourth while holding Hempfield to zero. Sealed by an interception in the endzone with two minutes to go in the game by Jake Knight on a 4th and 19 hail mary attempt from Detruf. This is not a game for Hempfield to hang their heads on however, they fought to the very end. Hempfield will take on Seneca Valley next weekend at home. Norwin will have a big road test next Thursday traveling to Central Catholic.
