EASTON- Notre Dame-Green Pond couldn’t ask for much more opportunities Friday night in their Colonial/Schuylkill League Showdown with North Schuylkill Spartans. Five turnovers a kick return for a score and two fourth down stops in an outstanding defensive effort en route to a 36-24 win before a boisterous crowd. The win gave coach Phil Stambaugh his 100th win.

The two schools are seventy miles apart but have built an intense rivalry over past few years, with the Spartans winning the last three meetings prior to Friday.

The Crusaders forced three fist half turnovers converting two of them into touchdowns. North Schuylkill quarterback Trevor Minalda fumbled on a fourth down on the Spartans initial drive and was recovered by Lucas Castro at the Notre Dame 41.

Danny Darno, quarterback of the Crusaders then connected on a 54 yard touchdown pass to A.J Lozano at the 6:25 mark of the opening quarter for a 7-0 lead.

Gavin Mentzer, then made a 37 yard field goal for the visitors to make it 7-3 after forcing a three-and-out on the Crusaders next possession.

A ten yard touchdown pass from Minalda to Collin Stanakis gave the Spartans their only lead of the night at 10-7 with 10:30 till half.

Notre Dame’s ensuing drive was sopped by a fourth down stop by the Spartan defense. North Schuylkill pushed the ball inside the Crusaders 30, but Dainn Vassallo stepped in front of a Minalda pass at the fifteen and returned it to the 32. Darno then placed a perfect pass to a streaking Josh Ludlow on a post pattern and he dashed in for a 68 yard score. Darno then snuck in a 2 point conversion pass to Ludlow near the front pylon for a 15-10 lead at intermission.

Late in the third quarter Darno hooked up with A.J Lozano for the second time on a deep sideline pass in single coverage and gave the Crusaders a 22-10 lead with 1:25 left.

The Darno to Lazano combination would hook up again in the fourth quarter on a five yard pass with 10:55 left in the contest making it 29-10.

North Schuykill showed no signs of letting thios game get away from them as Jared Tinari on a cut-back run was able to find the end zone from 21 yards out with six minutes left making it 29-17. But on the ensuing kickoff James Wisecarver took the kick from his own five and proceeded to find an opening in the middle of the field and took it the distance to push the score 36-17.

Then with 3:42 left to play, Jaxson Chowansky bulled his way from three yards out closing out the scoring for the contest.

Coach Phil Stambaugh, who coached at Pius X, prior to it being closed, talked about the win and getting that 100th win.

Danny Darno completed 15 of 23 passes for 247 yards and 4 touchdowns, 126 yards to Lozano on six receptions and three scores. Trevor Minalda picked up 184 yards passing on 19 of 29 passing and 1 score for the Spartans.
