SLATINGTON- In this strange Colonial League football season, the Palisades Pirates came into their contest with Northen Lehigh already playing two games, where the home team was playing in their first.

When the dust cleared, in a back and forth contest, The Pirates survived a valiant effort from the Bulldogs. Behind the legs of running back Mason Smeland, who accounted for 229 yards and four touchdowns leading the Pirates to a 35-27 victory.

The scoring spree started in the first minute of the contest as Bulldog running back Mike Repsher ripped off a 60 yard run off the right side of the line and outraced a couple of defenders to the end zone for a 6-0 as the PAT was no good.

Palisades though had an answer as they drove inside the Bulldog 20 as quarterback Jaden Newton flipped a screen pass to Smeland who dashed in from 17 yard out, with the PAT the score was 7-6, with just under seven minutes left in the opening quarter.

Smeland scored from five yards out with about eleven minutes left in the second stanza to give the Pirates a 14-6 lead. Palisades drove into Bulldog territory again, looking to extend the lead but a fumble on the snap led to Matt Brett Misera scooping up the loose ball and cashing it in from 65 yards out with the two-point conversion tied the score at 14 heading into intermission.

Northern Lehigh jumped back on top midway through the third quarter as quarterback Dylan Smoyer connected with a wide open Trevor Amorim for a 42 yard strike and a 21-14 lead with the PAT.

On the ensuing Pirate drive Smeland, on the first play, broke a couple of tackles at the line of scrimmage, and scampered down the sidelines for a 81 yard jaunt to tie the score at 21.

With about nine minutes left to go in the contest, Palisades took the lead with the ball on the Bulldog one, a missed handoff with Ben Haubert led to Newton diving on the ball just over the goal line for a 28-21 lead.

The Bulldogs were not ready to be put away just yet. A 13 play 81 yard drive culminated in a Matt Frame 2 yard score, bring the home team within a single point 28-27 with about 2:30 left in the contest. Northern Lehigh decided to go for two, a misdirection play with Frame carrying around the end was snuffed out by a swarming Pirate defense leaving the score at 28-27.

Smeland sealed the deal with a 55 yard run down the far sidelines for the closing margin of victory.

“Mason Smeland is the man, I don’t think too many people know who this kid was, they do now.” Palisades coach Ramie Moussa stated. “They had ten men in the box trying to stop him.” he concluded.

Palisades now 2-1 on the season are schedule to be at home next week against Salisbury, who lost to Notre Dame Green Pond Friday 51-22. Northern Lehigh is scheduled to face Southern Lehigh, who has yet to play a game to this point.
