It took all of one play from scrimmage for the Parkland offense to get rolling. As TJ Lawrence broke away from three or four tackles and down the sideline for a 59-yard touchdown, the Trojans began to make their statement on the road at Zephyr Stadium.
After gaining no yards on their first drive, Whitehall responded to Lawrence’s electric run. Tanner Dogmanits found brother Talon for a 30-yard completion and Jeziah Gregory then took off from 39 yards out. With a nice cut to his left, Gregory headed to the end zone and Whitehall led 7-6 with 6:42 to go in the opening quarter.
Quarterback Finn Coen only attempted five passes on the night. He complete four of those and all were very impactful. The first was a 20-yard completion to Nassim Adams to put the Trojans in the red zone. One play later, Lawrence ran off the right side again for his second score of the night. Parkland led 12-7.
The ensuing play by the Whitehall offense was coughed up after a penalty on the kickoff return had backed them up. Domenic Martrich fell on it and Parkland was again in business inside the Whitehall 10-yard line. On third down, Coen threw a dart to Blake Nassry over the middle for the 9-yard touchdown completion. Nassry ran the two-point conversion in and Parkland led 20-7 before the first quarter was out.
Things did not improve for Whitehall. A second turnover in Parkland territory ended a promising drive after only three plays. Two plays later, it was TJ Lawrence for the third time, chewing up yardage over the left side and going 56 yards to the house.
Down 27-7 with 10:53 to go in the half, Whitehall continued to buckle against the quick strike Trojans. Following a three-and-out, it was Naquan Thomason’s turn to get in on the action. He ripped off a 68-yard run, driving through an enormous hole opened up on the left side of the line. A sideline interference call moved the ball inside the ten and Thomason plowed in from seven yards out to make it 33-7 Parkland with 7:20 to go in the half.
The Parkland defense had the best stand of the night on the following drive. On 4th & 1 at the Parkland 21, the line stuffed Dogmanits for no gain and a turnover on downs. After the teams exchanged fumbles, the break finally came.
Parkland got the ball to open the second half, and delivered another haymaker. It took just 2:20 for the Trojans to find the end zone again, as Lawrence scored his fourth of the night from five yards out. On the ensuing drive, Liam Spang blocked the Whitehall punt and nearly took it the distance. He was caught on the one, so he had to wait one more play before finishing what he started.
For good measure, backup quarterback David Scherb tossed an 89-yard touchdown strike to David Barnes to end the scoring.
On the evening, TJ Lawrence carried 11 times for 136 yards and four scores. Naquan Thomason ran six times for 86 yards and a score, as the Trojans chewed up yards in chunks all night. Parkland outgained the Zephyrs 442-119, including a 307-56 disparity on the ground.
Parkland will now try to complete an undefeated regular season when they meet rival Emmaus next Friday night. Whitehall has already clinched the top spot in the District XI 5A playoff field and looks to fine-tune things against Central Catholic before opening the playoffs against East Stroudsburg South.
