Penn Cambria Advances to District 6 Championship in 41-7 Blowout of Forest Hills

Penn Cambria utilized 394 rushing yards and a stifling first-half defense to defeat Forest Hills 41-7, advancing to their third straight District 6 Class 3A Championship. The Panthers limited Forest Hills to just seven points and 59 rushing yards while forcing two turnovers. From the opening whistle, Penn Cambria’s defense controlled the game, forcing three first-half three-and-outs (while Forest Hills only had seven first-half drives) and repeatedly putting the Rangers in long third-down situations.

“That was our game plan coming in,” Penn Cambria’s coach Jason Grassi said. “We won on first downs and put them in situations where they had to throw the ball.” The Rangers faced ten third-and-five or longer situations where passing was their only option. Penn Cambria’s defense held Forest Hills to 59 rushing yards, their lowest total in a game since Week 5 of last season. As Coach Grassi noted, forcing the Rangers to pass played right into the Panthers’ hands, especially in the tough conditions with 25 mph winds and 50 mph gusts. Those passing situations also allowed the Penn Cambria pass rush to take over, recording three sacks and six tackles for loss. That pressure contributed to the Rangers’ 15-for-37 passing night (40.5% completion rate) and two interceptions, as Richardson was unable to get comfortable in the pocket.

However, none of it would have been possible without the Panthers’ rushing attack, as they controlled the game with just under 400 yards and five touchdowns. The Penn Cambria offensive line opened big holes all night, as the Panthers averaged an impressive 10.1 yards per carry on 39 attempts. Penn Cambria had two rushers top 100 yards, as quarterback Brady Jones rushed for 107 and three touchdowns, while star running back Corbin Vinglish added 209 yards and a score. After Forest Hills’ only points of the night, Vinglish immediately responded, taking the next play from scrimmage 65 yards for the score, draining the momentum from the Forest Hills sideline. Vinglish also made an impact on defense, bringing down the quarterback for a sack on the game’s first possession.

Forest Hills suffered a familiar fate, getting eliminated in the first round of the playoffs for the second straight year. The Rangers, however, have a young core that showed promise, led by Austin Pramuk, who caught four passes for 45 yards. Senior quarterback Xander Richardson won’t be part of that future, but he surely left his mark on the program, showing impressive poise and leadership throughout the game. The do-it-all athlete finished with 166 passing yards and added a rushing touchdown.

Penn Cambria looked like a completely different team from the one that fell 22-18 to Forest Hills in Week 3, leaving nothing to chance this time. They will face one of their toughest tests yet against Huntingdon in the District 6 Class 3A Championship, as the Bearcats defeated Clearfield, whom the Panthers fell to just last week. But Penn Cambria appears to be playing their best football when it matters, and Coach Grassi would agree: “We are playing really good football right now. Our kids are just playing with great effort, and I’m so proud of these guys right now.”

Next week Penn Cambria (9-2) will take on Huntingdon (8-3) in the District 6 Class 3A Championship at Mansion Park.
