Penn Cambria Claims District 6 Class 3A Championship in 33-6 Win Over Huntingdon

Last year Penn Cambria won the first District 6 Class 3A Championship in school history. It did not take long to get their second, as only one season later the Panthers kept the hardware in their possession with a 33-6 win over Huntingdon.

As the rain fell at Mansion Park, two teams lined up for their chance at history. Last season the Bearcats went 0-10 and won only four games since 2020. After a remarkable turnaround in the offseason, they found themselves at 8-3 with a chance at the title. Huntingdon’s current players were not even alive for the Bearcats’ last championship, as it came in 2005. Meanwhile, the Panthers have been the apex predator in Class 3A for a few years, with 2025 being their third straight championship appearance. Penn Cambria’s current senior class is the winningest in school history, only losing eight total games across four years.

These two teams pride themselves on their grit and physicality, which was evident from the jump, as both were held scoreless through the first quarter. In the second quarter the dam broke, as the two teams combined for 26 points. Penn Cambria’s Blake Lilly started the scoring after the Panther defense held strong and forced a punt in their own territory, which he returned 89 yards for an electric touchdown. “Normally you probably let that ball fair catch… he let it bounce, picked it up, and took it. We trust that he’s gonna do something like that, and he did it,” Coach Grassi said about Lilly’s return. Following that return, the game seemed to return to its ground-and-pound first quarter before 26 points were scored in the last 2:11 of the half.

Huntingdon’s kicker, Kaden Snare, was dialed in tonight, making 31- and 49-yard field goals in the final two minutes despite the rainy conditions. However, the true story of the last two minutes was once again Penn Cambria’s Blake Lilly, who scored a quick 51-yard touchdown on an incredible leaping catch. Lilly did not get a break after the long score, intercepting Huntingdon’s Elliott Guisler on the next possession and returning it back into the red zone, where the Panthers capitalized with a 15-yard receiving touchdown from Grant Gides. Penn Cambria’s 20-point lead into the half was more than enough, as Huntingdon’s offense was unable to get back into the game. The second half was all defense and Corbin Vinglish, as the star running back scored twice in the fourth quarter to lengthen the Panther lead to 27.

The player of the game was without a doubt Blake Lilly, as the WR/DB scored a punt return touchdown, a 51-yard receiving touchdown, and forced an interception. The unsung hero, though, was the entire Penn Cambria defensive line, which shut down Huntingdon’s run game after the first quarter. The Panthers’ pass rush made life very difficult for Elliott Guisler as well, forcing multiple third-down sacks.

“I mean, you never get enough. It’s never enough. You know, it’s awesome, but we’re moving on. We have a game next week, and we’ll enjoy it right now but then move on and get ready for the next game,” Coach Grassi noted about going back-to-back in championship games. While the Panthers will enjoy this win, they have larger goals and will be carrying a “1-0” mentality into next week when they take on the District 9 3A Champion, Brockway (7-4).
