The Penn Cambria Panthers take home the Goal Post Trophy after shutting out the Central Cambria Red Devils 36-0.
Penn Cambria absolutely shut down the Red Devils offense, holding them to just five first downs all game. The Panthers also had a huge night from Corbin Vinglish, accounting for three touchdowns.
Although Central Cambria struggled, they were still very much in that game in the first half, forcing two big red zone stops. They just could not get anything going offensively to complement their defensive stops.
“Too many mistakes early on where we put ourselves in awful field positions,” Central Cambria Head Coach Wade Klezek explained. “That makes it tough and lets them play downhill and aggressive. You do that and they’ll make you pay for it.”
Following a short 16 yard punt on the Red Devils first drive, Central Cambria got a big fumble recovery from Jett Williams as Penn Cambria was a few yards away from scoring.
The Panthers would quickly stop their offense and drove down the field. Vinglish got a big rush for 28 yards and then punched it in from one yard out a play later.
Another defensive stop led to another big offensive push from Penn Cambria. Brady Jones found Vinglish on a screen and he took off for a big 40 yard gain. A few plays later Vinglish finished the drive with another one yard touchdown.
Central Cambria would move the chains for the first time on the following drive, but another punt put the Panthers around midfield once again. They drove down to the three yard line, but Central Cambria got a big tackle for loss by Alex Kubat to hold them from another score.
“We have to finish drives,” Penn Cambria Head Coach Jason Grassi replied. “We had multiple drives inside the 10 and we didn’t get it in. We have to finish and that’s something we’ll work on at practice.”
That left the Red Devils with around two minutes to work with and they actually moved the ball to midfield, courtesy of 42 yards from Ryan Chappell, but there wasn’t enough time for them to run it down the field. That ended the half with a score of 13-0.
Coming out of the half, Penn Cambria got right back to it, driving 67 yards down the field. Jones capped off the drive with a 19 yard touchdown.
A swap of turnovers on downs, the Panthers got a stop inside the 10 yard line, forcing a punt. A bad snap from the Red Devils went through the back of the endzone and Penn Cambria picked up a safety.
Penn Cambria would add on again with Vinglish running in for his third touchdown on the night from two yards out.
“We practiced all week to run the ball and that’s what we did,” Penn Cambria running back Corbin Vinglish commented.
Vinglish finished the game with 72 rushing yards, three rushing touchdowns, and 40 receiving yards.
Ian Beck concluded the scoring for the Panthers with a two yard touchdown, finalizing the score 36-0.
“Our defense took the challenge this week,” Coach Grassi stated. “We said we were going to shut down 21 and we took it personal. That was their goal tonight and we did what we needed to do to win the game. I’m so proud of their effort tonight.”
Their gameplan of shutting down Central Cambria’s leading rusher Ryan Chappell was executed. Chappell rushed for just 61 yards after averaging 179 yards per game through the first four weeks.
Penn Cambria (4-1) will host Westmont Hilltop next week. Central Cambria (2-3) travels to Chestnut Ridge.
