Through three weeks of high school football, there are only five undefeated teams remaining in the Laurel Highlands. That is set to change on Friday night as two undefeated teams in the Penn Cambria Panthers and the Bedford Bison are set to face off.
Both are off to excellent starts to their seasons and are looking to continue their seasons with no losses. These two teams are very familiar with each other too as they faced off in 2023 and it came down to the very end. Penn Cambria won that matchup with a final score of 21-19. The teams are very similar from last year and both are off to good starts to the 2024 season. Let’s preview this LHAC week four matchup.
Penn Cambria Panthers
The Penn Cambria Panthers are coming off a big 30-22 victory against Forest Hills. They are looking very dominant in the run game with Gavin Harrold, Thomas Plunkett, and Mason Mento all having over 100 rushing yards through three games. Harrold leads the team offensively with a total of seven touchdowns. This offense is a run heavy with these three backs, but also has a pass game from Brady Jones that really only targets Harrold. This offense is consistently good, but so is their defense. It will look a little different this week as VMI commit Derek Hite will not be playing after suffering an injury last week. Aside from losing him, their defense has looked very strong this season.
Tonight, the Panthers need to just stop the run to be able to win. Bedford appears to have a solid defense, with allowing just 14 points in three games, but their opponents have a combined record of 0-9. Quincy Swaim has gotten the ball a lot thus far for the Bison, so stopping him will be the task for Penn Cambria. Offensively, they need to continue what they have done with pounding the rock. It is effective and reliable for the Panthers.
Bedford Bison
The Bedford Bison are off to an exciting start to the season, but they have their first big test tonight. Their opponents so far this season have not been great, but they have looked good against them all. They are led by senior quarterback and safety Quincy Swaim, who has 221 passing yards and 383 rushing yards. He is their go-to guy to move the ball, but they also have a solid running back in Owen Horne who has over 100 rushing yards as well. Defensively, the Bison have been strong, allowing just two touchdowns this season.
For Bedford to win tonight, they need to be able to stop the run. Penn Cambria passed just five times last week, so if the run game is working, they will stick to it all game long. They need to stop it early to throw the Panthers off their game. Offensively, Bedford needs to continue to get Swaim the ball as a runner, but also see them get their big receiver in Owen Tedrow involved more.
It is a big test tonight for Bedford, but it should be a good game overall.
