Penn State and Ohio State have played in plenty of marquee matchups, but many believe this is the biggest game in the storied rivalry.
The Nittany Lions entered the game with potentially their best chances of dethroning the Buckeyes in decades. The energy at and around Beaver Stadium pregame was unmatched compared to previous big games. I was in attendance in 2017 against Michigan and 2018 against Ohio State, but 2024 against Ohio State now stands as the best pregame atmosphere I have seen Beaver Stadium produce. With a plethora of Pregame shows calling State College home for the weekend, the celebrities in attendance, and the overall buzz in the air made this game feel different than previous OSU games, but the result in the end was the same.
Penn State-Ohio State, top 5 showdown in front of a clear blue sky, here’s how it unfolded:
On their first drive, Penn State was able to embark on a long drive that resulted in three points. Many fans and media alike had the same angle: PSU needs TDs, not FGs. But, at the end of the day, field goals are better than turnovers. Speaking of turnovers, On his first drive of the game, Will Howard fired a ball right into Zion Tracy’s hands, PSU 10.0.

That single moment is the highest point of the Penn State season. Everything was going perfectly. The Crowd was as loud as a Beaver Stadium crowd has been, and the team was playing phenomenally. But, the Buckeyes were not going to go away too easily, after all, they are still the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Will Howard, after throwing a pick-6, came out clinical in the ensuing drives. A pair of Howard TD passes and Ohio State led 14-10 in a blink of an eye. They would take the 14-10 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Ohio State was able to pay off drives with 2 field goals. In the end, only 20 points as enough to get them a road win in Happy Valley. Throughout the entire 2nd half, PSU would muster just 3 points. One of the pressure points of the 2nd half saw Penn State with a critical 1st and goal with a chance to tie the game. Instead of PSU scoring, the Buckeyes defense stood tall and did not allow Penn State to break into the endzone.
Another year, another Ohio State loss for the Penn State Nittany Lions. James Franklin spoke on the loss, “ We need to do a great job of eliminating the errors that cost us some plays. We can’t have the penalties we had this week. We have to be a disciplined football team. I understand the fan’s frustration, but College Football has changed, we have a chance to right our wrongs in the coming weeks.” The change in college football Franklin spoke of relies on the new 12-team playoff. Penn State still has a tremendous chance of making the playoffs and competing for a national title. Penn State is home this Saturday Night against Washington in their White Out.
