Penn Valley Remains Winless After Falling to Somerset in Shootout

Penns Valley and Somerset may have come into Friday’s contest with only two wins between them, but they engaged in an entertaining, high scoring shootout that saw Somerset come out on top 56-42. After the opening kickoff, Somerset would embark on a methodical 75-yard, twelve play drive. There was only one pass on the drive. Rowan Holmes, Carson Sanner, and Drew Miller shared the workload on a drive that culminated in a 2-yard touchdown run by Holmes. The Josiah Antram extra-point would give Somerset a 7-0 lead with 5:34 remaining in the quarter. Fletcher Ironside would gather the kickoff and return it 45-yards to the Somerset 35-yard line, but the Rams were unable to capitalize, and they turned the ball over on downs. Somerset wasted little time extending their lead. On the second play of the drive, quarterback, Colt Hagans connected with Cole Parry for a 62-yard catch and run to extend the lead to 14-0, following the extra point. Penns Valley would move for a couple of first downs on their next drive that carried into the second quarter, but they would stall and be forced to punt. Somerset would take possession on their own 20-yard line, and after a Sanner carry got them a first down on the 34-yard line, Somerset was penalized for holding. On the very next play, Hagans would throw a short pass to Sanner who would weave his way down the field for a 76-yard touchdown. The extra point would extend Somerset’s lead to 21-0 with 7:52 remaining in the first half. Ironside returned the next kickoff 42-yards to set the Rams up in Eagle territory. A Chase Shelley 20-yard run and a pass interference penalty moved the Rams inside the Somerset 10-yard line. Colby Miller would connect with Ironside on the very next play for an 8-yard touchdown pass; the Riley Winkelblech extra point made it 21-7. Somerset would start their next drive on their own 8-yard line, but it would only take them six plays, all on the ground, to negotiate the 92-yards. Holmes would score the touchdown from 9-yards out, but Miller and Hagans also had big runs on the drive. The extra point extended Somerset’s lead to 28-7 with 4:01 remaining in the half. A 36-yard Spencer Althouse return and personal foul penalty put the ball on the Somerset 36-yard line. Miller would connect with Ironside for 17-yards to give the Rams a first down. On the very next play, Miller would find Ironside again for a 19-yard touchdown pass. Winkelblech would drill the extra point to cut the Somerset lead to 28-14. Somerset’s Carter Dunmyer would gather the ensuing kickoff on the fourteen and after dodging a couple of tackles, would race 86-yards to push the lead once again to twenty-one, 35-14. Penns Valley would strike back. Following the kickoff, on the first play from scrimmage, Miller would hit Ironside on a slant over the middle who would split the Eagle defenders and race 79-yards for a touchdown that would cut the lead to 35-21, following the extra point. There would be no further scoring in the first half. The Rams were unable to do anything with their opening possession of the second half and following a partially blocked punt, Somerset would have the ball on the Ram 22-yard line. The Eagles would run the ball the ball on seven consecutive plays with the final carry being a 3-yard Holmes touchdown run. The Antram extra point made the score 42-21 with 6:47 remaining in the third quarter. Althouse returned the next kickoff 29-yards to his own 49-yard line. Miller passes of 12-yards to Koltin Shawver and 38-yards to Althouse set the Rams up on the Somerset 3-yard line. Shawver would run it in from there, cutting the Somerset lead to 42-28, following the extra point. Somerset started their next possession on the Ram 40-yard line. On the first play from scrimmage, Miller would scamper 40-yards for a touchdown, pushing the Somerset lead to 49-28 with 4:35 remaining in the quarter. There would be no further scoring in the quarter. Somerset was able to keep the Rams at arms length for the rest of the contest. Colby Miller would connect on touchdown passes of 9-yards to Ironside and 45-yards to Althouse in the fourth quarter, giving him five for the game. Sandwiched between those two touchdowns was a 10-yard touchdown run by Sanner from Somerset. Penns Valley falls to 0-8 with the loss. Somerset now sits at 3-5.
