Penns Manor nips Portage, Marion Center overcomes mistakes to beat Conemaugh Township!

GRSN Heritage Conference Double Header

Game#1 PORTAGE MUSTANGS(2-3) @ PENNS MANOR COMETS(2-3)

Just an absolutely beautiful night Friday. I didn’t get to catch Portage last year (the only team I missed in the conference). So I made the trip to Clymer to catch the Mustangs at Comets. I was really impressed with the Portage line when I saw them done at Richland in July. Senior Quarterback Easton Slonac is one of the few returning skill players. The host Comets also count on their big guys up front. Both teams came in 2-3 and needing a win if they have any playoff hopes.

Portage looked real good early jumping out to a 12-0 lead and then 20-7 lead at halftime.  Penns Manor battled back in the second half and scored with 39 seconds to go in the game. They made the PAT and won 21-20. Both teams are very similar, and I thought this would be a tight game. The offenses were pretty even with both teams getting about 250 total yards. Most of the Mustangs came through the air and most of the Comets came on the ground.  The Mustangs took the ball away twice in building their lead but turned the ball over with less than five minutes to go in the game and the Comets who had cut the lead to six made them pay.

Players of the Game

Portage Easton Slonac 14 for 25 passing 160 yards & 2 TDs plus was leading rusher with 47 yards on 15 carries

Penns Manor Justin Voytek 33 rushes 182 yards & 3 TDs, you can’t rush for that many yards unless the big guys up front are doing their jobs.

Portage           12-8-0-0=20

Penns Manor   0-7-7-7=21

M-Llheson Walker 9 run 2pt run ng 444 (6-0)

M-Lucas Gathers 26 pass from Slonac 2pts run ng 254 (12-0)

C- Voytek 1 run xp Ty Brendlinger 1024 (12-7)

M-Tyson Burkett 29 pass from Slonac 2pts Conner Sciko from Burkett 105 (20-7)

C-Voytek 1run xp Brendlinger 508 (20-14)

C-Voytek 2 run xp Brendlinger 039 (20-21)

Note -Portage was clicking early but one mistake can often decide a game. Portage had issues on first PAT and had to chase the point the whole game. Ty Brendlinger was 3 for 3 (4 for 4 if you were there)

Comet Center Nick Frampton with his team down 12-0 as Justin Voytek was stopped at the inch yard line, above an angry crowd “ Right here, let go now” Voytek went into the end zone on the next play! Nick also made the tackle on the two point conversion attempt by Portage.

GAME#2 CONEMAUGH TOWNSHIP INDIANS(3-2) @ MARION CENTER STINGERS(5-0)

Made in just in time to see them crowning the king & queen! Stinger Coach Adam Rising could not have been happy with his team’s performance in the first half. They had six penalties, two turnovers, three missed conversions and had let the Indians return the opening kickoff for a touchdown. They MC led 18-14 against a very good CT team.

Marion Center would come out in the second half and control the ball for 22 more plays than the Indians but while the CT defense was bending it didn’t break until #7 ((Troy Slovinsky) scored on a jet sweep at 11:46 of the 4th.  It took the Indians just over two minutes to get the touchdown back on a Greyson Studer to DJ Bambino pass. With 9:26 to play the Stingers led 25-20. The Indians got the ball back at their on 25 with 4 minutes 53 seconds to go. On fourth and four from their own 31 the Indians pass fell incomplete. Tyler Phillips bulled into the end zone after a great fourth down run by Camden Rising. The Stingers move to 6-0 and remain at the top of the Heritage Conference. Now that they have become the top dog, everyone will be shooting for the Stingers. Next week they travel to Northern Cambria who played for the District 1 A championship last year.

Indians Big Plays

Carson Canfield 89 kick return for a touchdown

Greyson Studer 2 TD passes

DJ Bambino & Brennan Lohr a TD reception
