In the last week of high school football’s regular season, the Chichester Eagles (1-8) matched up against the Pennwood Patriots (2-8). Chichester was coming off their first victory last week to Interboro, while Pennwood struggled against Chester and looked to bounce back tonight. The Patriots took home a win in the last game of the season 24-14 over the Eagles.
Pennwood started with the ball inside Chichester’s territory to start the first quarter. Within the first minute of the game Quarterback, Taj Cobb, exploded for a 36 yard run. Soon after, Cobb punched in the first points of the game on a 1 yard rushing touchdown.
The first look at the Eagles offense seemed to be a good one. Running back, Maurice Denzler, carried most of the load before Pennwood’s Troy Sutton got a sack on third down. Chichester tried to get on the board with a field goal but missed, resulting in a turnover on downs.
After a couple good defensive stops from both teams, Pennwood finally found some more momentum. Defensive back, Rashon Sanders, ended up scooping up the ball and using his electric speed down the sideline on a 58 yard fumble recovery touchdown with zero seconds left. The Patriots now led 14-0 heading into the second quarter.
Maurice Denzler took it upon himself to get into the endzone after Chichester received the ball back. Denzler broke off a 39 yard run, which was followed by his 1 yard rushing touchdown.
Unfortunately, Chichester missed the extra point making the score 14-6 with nine minutes remaining in the second quarter.
Taj Cobbs continued to extend plays on his feet, opening up holes for his teammates. Cobbs took off on a 47 yard run and followed it up with a rocket down the middle to Wide receiver, Sheldon Hannible, on a 29 yard pass.
The Patriots offense seemed to be on a roll until being stopped on third and goal. Pennwood elected to take their FG, adding to their lead 17-7.
Down by two scores, The Eagles started to look towards their pass game. After a couple completions, Quarterback, Anthony Nuemann, took a deep shot downfield looking for his man Cameron Guasperini. Pennwoods Defensive Back, Rashon Sanders, stepped in front of Neumann’s pass and intercepted him.
Rashon Sanders was thanked for his interception, as Cobbs wasted no time giving the ball right back to him on offense. Sanders scored on a 21 yard strike from Taj Cobbs to go up 24-6 on Chichester with little time remaining in the second quarter.
Linebacker, Haji Ali, ended up intercepting Anthony Nuemann again on back to back drives. However, Chichester’s defensive back, Will Brunson, Intercepted Cobbs before Pennwood had a chance to score again before halftime.
The entire 3rd quarter was a defensive battle, with 0 points being scored from both sides. Patriots Cornerback, William Goll, came up with an interception late in the quarter.
With the start of the fourth quarter Chichester trailed 24-6. Cornerback, Nahkai Bivens, sparked something within the Eagles after intercepting Taj Cobbs to start the quarter.
Chichester drove down the field, completing multiple passes. Neumann was eventually able to connect with Cameron Guasperini, who scored on a 23 yard touchdown.
Pennwood kept it simple the rest of the game, keeping the ball on the ground and away from Chichester.
Although, Chichester’s Chase Brown came up with a safety towards the end of the game. Pennwood’s defense continued to strive in the secondary as Rashon Sanders added a third interception to his resume on the night.
Patriots Nasir Sherif solidified the game by picking off Nuemann one last time.
Cobbs took a knee to secure Pennwood’s victory 24-14 over the Chichester Eagles.
