Hello and welcome to this week’s edition of PFN’s Willie is Cookin’ In Philly.  While the Philadelphia area may soon be coming down with a case of Pennant Fever with the Phillies regular season ending and the Phightin Phils looking like a playoff team, but you know what else is heating up in Big Willie’s kitchen the High school football season. Hard to believe this weekend will be the fourth course of football for the year. Now it’s time to look at What’s Cookin’ In Philly.

Programs First: In just their third varsity game ever, the Audenried Charter Rockets picked up their program’s first varsity victory, doing so in rather convincing fashion, defeating Vaux Big Picture 26-6.

Honoring the 2000 PCL Red Champs: At halftime of this Friday Night’s game against Upper Darby. Cardinal O’Hara will be honoring the 2000 Philadelphia Catholic League Red Division Championship. The 2000 Lions went 10-2 (5-2 in PCL Red Play) in the CL semi-finals. Frank Vinci’s 26-yard field goal with 6 seconds left propelled the Lions past LaSalle on their way to routing St Joseph’s Prep 35-10 behind a 4-touchdown performance by future NFL’er Kevin Jones.

Back-to-Back Defensive Touchdowns: Roman Catholic’s Sabri Dawson 39-yard pick six in Friday Night’s 21-12 victory over Chestnut Hill Academy marked the second consecutive week that Dawson had found the endzone while the Cahillites were on defense. In the Cahillites’ victory over Cardinal Newman (FL) on August 29, Dawson had a 51-yard strip six.

Going the Distance: In Kennett’s 33-22 victory over Norristown, Joalxex Carbajal had a 100-yard pick six.

Sunday Football: While the Eagles are in Kansas City to battle the Chiefs on Sunday afternoon, there’s still football being played in South Philadelphia on Sunday. The South Philly Super (10th and Bigler) will host the Catholic League Blue Division battle between Archbishop Ryan and Neumann-Goretti.

Cardiac Kids: Under first-year Head Coach Darrell Scott Pope John Paul II is off to a perfect 3-0 start. However, fans of the Golden Panthers might not have any nails left to chew on, as all three games have been decided by a single point and two of them have gone to overtime. This week, the Golden Panthers host Bishop Shanahan in what some may consider a potential District 1 4A Championship game preview.
