It was a rainy night at West Mifflin Area High School, but that did not stop the Pittsburgh Central Catholic Vikings from securing another victory.
Surprisingly, the Vikings’ offense started slowly. Matthew Hirsch grabbed a fumble and rumbled to the endzone givingthe Big Macs with an early lead and the Vikings playing from behind to start the game.
But that could have just been the Vikings taking some time to get warmed up, because midway through the first quarter, Herrick threw a rocket down the field that perfectly hit the hands of Tight End Colsen Gatten to put Pittsburgh Central Catholic on the board. The Vikings converted on two of their three two-point attempts throughout the night, and the first touchdown is where that all started. The Vikings took the one-point lead and never looked back.
The first quarter did not end with a mere one-point lead, as Roman Thompson made his way to the end zone to put the Vikings up by a full score, and another successful two-point attempt put Pittsburgh Central Catholic up 16-7 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter didn’t see too much activity on the scoreboard; the Vikings put up the only points of the second frame. Before they scored, they had to make their way into the red zone, and they broke out the trick play to extend their scoring drive by faking a punt. Roman Thompson went on to score his second touchdown of the night to put the Vikings up 24-7 at halftime.
The start of the second half seemed to be a near mirror image for the Vikings, with Owen Herrick throwing an early interception. Unlike Herrick’s first pick, this one was not returned for a touchdown. That interception did not do much for the Big Macs as they could not capitalize by putting points on the board.
Once again, the Vikings got warmed up, and by the end of the third quarter, they were right back in the end zone courtesy of Maceo Watkins, Jr. Their two-point attempt on this score was their only unsuccessful attempt, but the touchdown still left the Vikings sitting with a comfortable 30-7 lead with the final frame still to come.
The Vikings padded their lead early in the fourth quarter. Roman Thompson completed the hat trick just over a minute into the frame, and Jordan Ray snagged an interception just a minute later. It only took one play for the Vikings and Chris Black to score again. Black’s touchdown was the final score of the game, and left the Vikings with a 44-7 victory.
The Canon-McMillan Big Macs end their season with a 3-8 record combined between regular season and postseason play. The Pittsburgh Central Catholic Vikings will take on the North Allegheny Tigers next Saturday, November 15, at Pine Richland High School.
